vacum

82 300sd. Having small problem with vacum for heater and ignition. I have good vacum at y branch befor firewall and if I plug line that goes to ignition at the the ignition then all of my vent work as they should but when I hook the 2 lines up my heat must go to a default mode and I don't have any floor heat. Is it possible that the ignition switch is somehow leaking? It does have an oilly film all around it It does act like it has a leak inside the switch. Any help would help. Stu

Stu:

The switch is probably bad, and the shutoff vac solenoid is also probably bad, too -- that is where the oil is coming from. Pull the brown with blue stripe hose off the shutoff servo and see if it has oil in it. If so, replace both the switch on the ignition and the shutoff.

by the shutoff servo do you mean were the brown and the brown and blue line plug into the switch. If so yes that is were the oil is.

Stu:

That is the switch.

The servo is on the injection pump in the engine compartment. The diaphram is probably leaking, allowing oil into the vac system, and that will kill the switch.

I changed the vacum control unit on the pump last week. that is were the br and blue line go to. Is tha t what you are refering to? If it is then I still need to change the ign switch.

Sorry I just double checked. The brown blue line Does to to metal vac control valve and I did not change that. What I replaced was the plastic valve that helps shift the tranny.

Stu, does the engine stop immediately when you turn the key off? That would be another sign that the shut off valve (in back of the injection pump) is shot, as PSfred suggests. It's pretty easy to replace although a little awkward to reach. You'll know for sure when you can take the key out and the car just keeps on running!

No the engine runs for a couple of seconds after. So I disconected the valve and first pulled a vacuum by had with the mityvac and it shut off right away and the I did what the cd told me and that was to hook the valve directly to the vacuum line in the engine comp, and again it shut off imediately. I'm leaning towards the switch on the ign switch. Although I still have that oil problem around the ign Switch and appears to be in some of the lines. By reading the manual on the cd it tells me that this is very bad. I seem to have the corect amount of vacuum.

Stu:

It's the switch. The vacuum portion is separate, I think.

Probably the previous owner replaced the servo, but there was oil in the lines, and the switch then died later.

I suspect that if you replace the vacuum switch, everything else will work properly.
