Thinking about it
I am considering buying a mid 80's diesel and have two questions:
1. What can I expect to budget for maintenance and upkeep? 2. What are the key things to look out for in evaluating the car? Thanks. |

Dogonit,
Your response was not discouraging. It was helpful. Lots to consider. No free lunches. I was not aware of the trap oxidizer issue. That sounds expensive. I've got time to find the right car. My budget question really was geared at figuring out whether it makes more sense to spend more upfront and get more recent vintage. Thanks for getting back to me. Jeff |

water damage
Jeff,
I agree with 'dogonit' but must add that you pull up the floor mats and look for signs of water damage on the bottom of the mats and the floorboards. A lot of members here have had problems with this. You will spend a bit more, but getting a good one is worth the extra $. The regular upkeep is in line with most all the other cars I've owned. If you get a car over 15 years old there are some non routine maintenance things you will need to do. If you are mechanically inclined you can do most of the stuff yourself and the parts shop here has good prices with fast delivery Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of info and knowlegable people here. thebern
