what kind of mpg are you getting?

On a recent trip to Michigan I averaged between 70 and 75 mph and got around 23 mpg. Pretty fair or should I be expecting a little more?

I tend to get about 23 or a little better in everyday use, but

above 25, sometimes as high as 26.5, under steady 70 mph cruising conditions in relatively flat terrain. This is in an '85 300TD, which presumably has the 2.88 rear axle, not the 3.07 of earlier 300TD turboes (non-turboes had a 3.47 -- that's why they get poorer mileage from less power).

On a trip I took last weekend I got 22 mpg to my destination and 26 mpg on the trip back. The car tends to average between 24-26 mpg gallon and the worst mileage has been around 20 mpg.

There was a VERY extensive thread on MPG within the last year or two. Search the archives and you'll find lots of information. There is a HUGE variation in what people get, some under 20mpg, some as high as 30-32. (Note: This is specifically for W123 chassis with the turbo 5-cylinder OM617... other chassis/engines get different MPG.) A "good" one should be 25 city, 30 freeway, or close to that.

If you live in CA, or somewhere else that sells oxygenated (?) diesel fuel, you will suffer 10-15% lower MPG than the rest of the USA. There are a ton of things that can affect MPG, but I'd start by disabling your EGR, checking the air filter, adjusting the valves, and making sure the brakes aren't dragging. And you do have 32-35psi in your tires, right?

21.5 average around town, 24.5 average open road at around 75-85 with air on. Not much difference with A/C off. I think that is pretty good for a early 80's car built like a box and pulling as much weight.

I always get around 22-24mpg all city driving. Lots and lots of stop and go. I've seen 18 even when I had leaks in a few spots.. :p

(Fuel tank door, the steel lines under the car). However now it's back to 22-24. I've seen more but that was highway driving and I don't do much of it.

My 1981 300CD gets 26 to 30 mpg. I do mostly two lane highway driving with a mix of small town and city driving. 30 mpg has only been achieved a few times. But, I've only gotten 26 mpg a few times, too. Usually get about 28. I feel pretty good about this non-turbo doing that well. And I've checked the odometer on a test course. It was nearly perfect.

I seldom get over 60 mph, due to the two lane roads and the number of speed traps. This probably helps my mileage.

My 450 SEL, a gray market car, gets 17 to 19 mpg in town or on the road. Very little fluctuation. The American versions I am familiar with never did that well. But, it is still expensive to operate versus the good old diesel.

On my 1980 240D I get about 27 city and 31 highway. My 83 300D gets just a tad better, about 27.5 city and 31.5 highway. And I frequently drive 80+ MPH.

I've tracked my mileage constantly and made changes along the way over the last several years. The items that improved my mileage the most was adjusting the valves and setting the injection timing.

I think your mileage is low. Also I don't really buy the idea that some just get better that others, especially when the difference is 20% or more. I would bet that you have something wrong. It could be valves out of adjustment, timing off, an injector leaking down, low tire pressure, brakes dragging, clogged air filter, poor fuel quality, etc, etc. You should try to fix it because you will find that improving the fuel economy will also improve performance, which to some of us is just as important as fuel economy.

I just got 29.5 mpg hauling three family members around Los Angeles over several days. I'm impressed.

Hi guys,

My Mercedes usually gets about 27 mpg back and forth to work, in a mix of city and freeway driving. On my trip to California early this year, I noticed that speed has a large impact on mpg. At an indicated 65 or less, I get slightly above 30 mpg. Mileage drops into the low 20's at a steady 80 mph. Driving at 60 mph for about 400 miles, I got 34 mpg.

Just my .02

On my '87 300SDL, I get 22 mpg around town with the a/c. It seems to be the same w/ a/c off. On ALL highway driving, the best I ever got was 34 mpg. Not bad for a luxo-tank that weighs around 2 tons...

Wink

On a recent trip to my mechanic in Albany, Ga. I achieved 29.9 MPG in my 85 300CD with three passengers riding along. Average driving speed was between 45 and 70 MPH because I took U.S. 19, so I think that's amazing. I've only had the car for 3 weeks now and the lowest I've gotten was about 24.8

1981 300TDT: 22-25mpg

1983 240D manual 4spd: 24-26mpg

Lower than I had hoped, but still good. And really not much difference between hiway and city driving.

Now if diesel prices can come back down below 87octane...
