Transient vacuum leak is driving me crazy

I've started some troubleshooting but the weird thing is, the problem comes and goes. Sometimes all locks work great, even after car has been sitting for a while, and sometimes the locks won't work at all even with the car running! The other symptom is run-on which is also transient. There just doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. I'm going batty.
You'd think if I had a leak, the symptoms would stay the same not come and go?

Try taking notes

When you get occurances of door lock failure or any other vacuum failure, take notes of door open or closed, engine running or not, ambient temperature, whatever. This will help you diagnose it. I've got one going on right now that I believe is associated with the ACC, but until I collect a little more data, it is hard to say.

My guess is you have a break in the hose that runs from the interior to the door, through the door frame. I had one where there was a little crack in the hose. I didn't really figure it out until I tried to turn off the engine with the door open and the sucker wouldn't shut off. With the door closed, sometimes it leaked and sometimes not. With the door open, big leak, engine kept running.

Good luck and take notes,,,,,it will help.

Thats where I would look too.. Odds are its at the area where the tubes bend when you open and close the doors.. Those are easy to fix.. But hard to locate..

Shawnster:

JCD has excellent advice here. Don't worry about the car "run on" because that is most certainly a symptom of the door issue.
Your doors will function differently with car running or off and with doors in lock position or open position. In addition, I suspect he was on to something with the door actually open or closed.
The door actuators are almost always the culprit. Did two more this weekend. One for me and one for dieseldaddy.
A quick diagnostics on that deal is simply to draw vac (mighty vac - did you get one yet?) on each door in the open and close position.
In that way you don't have to worry about the car running or not and where the door locks are.
Let me know if that makes sense.

Don
