finally bought 300TD
Hello Fellow Benzers
After asking many questions on this discussion board and doing a lot of searching, I finally found my 1985 300TD. Didn't catch all of the problems until I brought it home and had a chance to look at it good. But with the help of this distinguished board of experts, I hope to iron out the problems. Perhaps I should ask just one question at a time instead of listing all of them together. The first one which is probably the most annoying is the ELECTRIC FAN SEEM TO RUN ALL THE ITME, EVEN WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER TURNED OFF. Have traced the wire from the fan all the way back to where it goes thry the firewall, apparently to the dash area. I assume that it must work in conjunction with some type of temperature gauge on the engine, but don't know quite where to look. I have bought a Haynes Manual, but it doesn't quite spell out this problem and I am not very good at tracing down wiring diagrams. I have some other problems, but I will address them one at a time. Thank you all in advance for any suggestions. |

If I understand the system correctly, it should run all the time, sometimes at low levels, unless the far right button on the row of controls is pushed in. Then it should shut off.

Sorry, I mean't the fan to the radiator. The climate control is another sore subject but I will tackle it later.
Thanks for replying... Dave |

I lived in FL. for some years.. and it was a common thing to jump them so they ran all the time... .. Also I seem to remember it also has a switch on the engine temp.. I think the one near the thermostat housing.. Living here in cooler country one forgets about those things.. I also remember the fan would come on just from the car setting in the sun if the AC system had to much of a charge.. Odds are some one has jumped it at one of these locations or a switch has failed..
Oh ya... when you get things done and have a little extra time.. pull the fan.. take it apart.. Clean it up.. put some grease in the front ball bearing.. some oil on the rear bushing.. Odds are the brushes are fine.. Its easy and gives you a chance to get all the bugs and stuff from behind it.. Congrads on your new 300TD.. I just picked one up my self.. Wanted one for lots of years... But just came across the one for me.. Ken |

Some thing about those two switches keeps bothering... and I think I remember what it is... I seem to remember that they fail closed... That is if they fail the fan will run all the time the key is on..

Thanks. The former owner has the AC changed out to the new type of freon and a rebuilt compressor installed so he probably had a new dryer put on and they may have shorted the switch out so the radiator fan runs all the time. He lived in Miami so your suggestion that it is done in FL may be true. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have more of a problem.
