Expert Diesel Fuel Injection Tech/Mechanic in Tampa Bay or Florida, Can Anyone Help?

I live in Clearwater, Fl I have a 1991 350SDL (original owner) with some fuel injection issues. I really need to find an expert MB tech/mechanic that knows these cars. Can anyone help with leads?

Thank you.

Are you near Gainesville? Stevebfl owns a shop there, Continental Imports, and he is also an authorized Bosch fuel injection repair facility.

Go to Gainesville

As a fellow Tampa Bay area resident, I feel your pain. Unfortunately, all three of the local dealers have terrible service departments. I personally have at least one horror story with each one. If this injection problem is really bugging you, I would strongly suggest you make the 3 hour drive to Continental Imports in Gainesville. The owner of that shop posts on this board as stevebfl. I don't think he monitors this forum, but posts often in Tech Help. As was stated before, he runs a Bosch authorized shop and he will amaze you with his knowledge of these cars. If anything serious happens to mine after the warranty expires, I will certainly take it there.

You might also want to post your problem in the Tech Help forum and put steve's name in the title to be sure he sees it. Who knows, maybe he even knows of a good diesel shop closer to home.

Thanks Rick & Tank,

Steve Brotherton was kind enough to refer me to a Tampa shop which I will check out in the nexr few days. It is very difficult for me to get to Gainsville to see Steve for a variety of reasons but it is great to know about that option.

In the meantime someone else on this forum recommended a shop in St.Petersburg by the way of Whispells and I went by there today.

My problems are intermittent rough idle and injector knock that started with replacing the seals on the pressure valve holders on top of the injector pump.Whispells said my problems are likely a result of worn out injector tips and he wants to start there. He contends they are only good for 90K miles, mine have 146K on them. I was very impressed with Mr. Whispell and it is an old timey kind of place. He works on Rolls Royces too and there was one there when I was. He says he has the necessary Bosch test equipment to do the injector job right.

BTW Tank, I am the original owner, it has been a joy to own and drive up til now (rough idle). No serious problems other than a turbo replacement at around 110K miles, leaking bearing that I couldn't find anyone locally to replace so I had to go for a rebuilt turbo.

It also runs a little hotter than it used to in summer here but still within a safe range.

The injector pump also has some external leaks (since around 90K miles) which I understand is common with the only cure being an approximately $1500 - $2000 replacement with a rebuilt. This leaking deteriorates the left engine mount.

I have had no front end work done yet except for tie rod replacements twice but I think I'm due, getting some front end shake when I go over bumps at higher speeds.

No, it's close to downtown, near the dome. Just south of 1st ave. south off 21st street, I think. Look em' up in the yellow pages to be sure. Great people who really know mercedes. I think they're an authorized service station for Mercedes and Rolls Royce.
