Odd rear tire wear

The rear tires on my 300D are wearing oddly. The inside tread is down to nearly nothing about an inch outward from the inner sidewall. The rest of the tire tread looks fine. There are 4 connecting links(arms) on the rear and I suspect a bad(worn) one.How do I find which one?Nothing has been done on the car in the rear except brakes and wheel bearings. The struts are still rock solid and not leaking or anything.Would a 4 wheel alignment correct it?I am tempted to completely rebuild the entire rear suspensiondue to it's age. What kind of cost would I be looking at?Would fastlane have all the parts I need?Has anyone done this?It looks like a tough job but I am sure I can do it.I just need some input as to where I should look first.
I'll need new tires and I hate to wear them out prematurely because of this problem.TIA ! Joe...................................

Were these tires originally installed on the rear, or have they spent time on the front?

Most likely a complete rebuild of the rear suspension would be a waste of money. On your 124 car, there is a toe adjustment that can be made. It is, however, important to see that no links have loose bushings or are bent.

Your challenge will be finding a competent tech with a decent four wheel alignment system.

Unless you're in Florida, I have no idea where to send you.

Good luck,

Yeah Larry...the tires are not even with the fronts because previous owner ran winter treads on the rear only and left 2 of the summers on the front causing unbalanced tire wear from front to back so I had been running the better of the two tires on the front all summer. They were almost new when I bought the car and I figured the more tread the better on the front.Ya know better grip in inclimate weather. It might just be lack of rotating them.
Ken300D said it might be subframe mounts on the control arms worn.Sounds likely.
Car has low mileage for the year but she's starting to show her age.Nearly 16 now. Thanks guys...

PS...test drove a 2002 jetta TDI automatic.NICE car but mama said "too small" ! Gotta haul the kids around ya know.I only wish the 300D had heated seats.

I drove a Jetta TDI before buying my C240. I almost had myself talked into it. The $10,000 savings is compelling.

The last thing I did before trying to cut a deal was to take it back out and corner hard on an entrance ramp in a cloverleaf intersection. The car handled really freaky. When it started swaying hard, it felt like it was a phone booth mounted on a couple of skate boards.

The other thing that I found heavily against this car was the fact that it has a timing belt and there is ZERO amount of room to change it. I found out later that it is a really big job. Timing belts are bad enough when they are easily accessed. I want nothing to do with one that is almost inaccessible.

The power and fuel mileage of these cars is difficult to beat, though.

Back to your 124 car. The rear suspension mounts don't seem to be as critical as those on the 123's. That is not to discourage you from checking them though.

I still say, if you can find an experienced four wheel alignment guy with a good attitude, he will find the problem and fix it in short order.

Best of luck,
