124 Front Seat Rebuilding
I have finally decided to rebuild the front seats on my 87 300TD with Palomino Leather. THe seats sag and offer little support. It literaly has become a PITA after long rides. THe Leather is worn and has a hole on the side. I assume I need new covers and horse hair padding. I will do both front seats. How do I know if the seat springs are bad?.
I would appreciate any suggestions of difficulty and where to buy the covers and horse hair pads. About how much will this cost?

my experience
Performance has the leather and the pads. There may be other sources. I paid about $100 each for the pads only.
I replaced just the "horsehair" pads and had my father in law sew in replacement panels for the seat bottoms panels that were cracked. It went pretty well, and I didn't have to remove the seats from the car. Once you get the covers off, you should be able to see if there are broken wires in the seat frame. There are several links that describe all aspects of this repair. later

broken springs
You can look from under the seat and see. The springs are in the form of a "square wave" - they look like 2-3" of straight wire, then a 90 degree turn, another 2-3", then another 90 degree turn... They break at the 90 degree turn. My seat had 3 breaks when I got the car. My headrest control wouldn't work, one of the sharp spring ends severed the wire.... It is not difficult, just time consuming to repair. New springs are available, I found one from a junkyard on the internet mailed to me for $40.
Do a search on seat spring replacement, there are several good articles around. Most models are pretty close. The article I found was for a 123 or 124, but the 126 I have was nearly identical. Let me know what you find on seat covers. Best I found was about $750 for a pair of front seats. I tryed a dying company. Fair results, but they did not condition the seats and the leather has cracked a bit again. Chuck |

If the seats sag, the springs are shot and need to be replaced. Even if not broken, they have bent and are not holding you up correctly. Junkyards are a good place to look, but specify the passenger spring set -- usually not as bad as the driver's side.
Don't replace the padding unless it is falling apart -- soft seats that lean one way or the other aren't padding going south -- you will feel the springs if the pads are gone. They usually last forever. Peter
