As it gets cold the car may be hard to start, but I doubt it. My car always started no trouble. The motor just did not sound right. It sounded like an old diesel starting but smooth out shortly. What did my glow plugs in was the relay went bad, oh well the mechanic was very nice.
Have a great day Paul 1999 E300D |

Ken, how's she running with 93k? Youve got the most mileage I've heard on a '99. I've got 43k on my '99 and my mom has 39k on her '99. Just wondered how it's holding up, showing any age?

Lightman,
It's running very well! Just like when it was new. This is the best car I have ever owned and is my second MB diesel. The first was a 1991 E-class 2.5 turbo which was also great but this '99 is in a different class from a performance perspective. These cars are long-term keepers! All of that said, I have been a passenger in some of the new E-class diesels with the common rail powerplants in Europe. They are VERY quiet. Sure would be sweet to have that choice here in the USA. Enjoy, Ken |

If you purchased the extended service program they are not covered. If you purchased the PREMIUM extended program the "starter system components" covers the glow plugs. Check you program. If it is the premium one, call the dealer Dave

There seems to be a big range on these glow plug lifes...
I've been keeping up with this issue in VW's and MB. All mercedes post 91+ have a post glow feature. It keeps the plugs on for lower emissions and better cold running(up to 180 seconds). From indirect experience, there seems to be a common thread that Bosch glowplugs are the ones that seem to have a short life. The Beru are more expensive(except from MB??) and seem to give a longer life. On OM606 engines, both manufactures would have supplied plugs to Mercedes. I would suggest talking with Mercedes Technical department and try and get Beru replacements, especially at $600. Michael

Dave, are you sure?
Not to argue, but I want to make sure of this before I raise a stink (again) with Mercedes. Your signature shows 56,000 miles on your E300, so you're just barely out of factory warranty, which covered them. I had a set of glow plugs put in at 43,000 miles and they were covered. Then the last set at 76,000 was not covered. I just clicked over to 80,000 miles today.
I do indeed have the premium contract from Mercedes Benz, at a cost of over $1600. However, there seems to be some confusion about this. Every time I've tried to get something fixed under this contract, they deny that I have it. I think it's because I bought it a year after I bought the car and they didn't enter it into the computer correctly. But after some prodding from me, they eventually "find" it and cover the repairs. But the service writer told me specifically that the glow plugs are not covered. I checked the contract yesterday and I see that it says "starter system components", but that is in the electrical section and sounds like just the starter and solenoid. So, can you give me some more ammunition? A copy of a repair order where they covered the plugs would be fantastic! Thanks.

I would love to give you some amo for this. But I have been corrected by my dealer. I ahve been told that they consider the glow plugs to be a wear item and they do not cover them under the extended plan.
Sorry for the confusion. I guess I will be learning how to replace the glowplugs on this car.

I just got the glow plug light and check engine light this A.M. Car started fine, no roughness or smoking - but it's 70 degrees in Dallas this morning. Guess it's time for the third set of glow plugs. Car is 5.5 years old, just rolled 50K miles last week. Get to do it myself this time; it's one of the few items not covered by my extended warranty.

Is that the '98 listed in your profile? If my math is right, then you bought it in July of 1997. I didn't think they released them that early.
When my glow plugs failed, the lights never indicated anything wrong. Please post the results after you get it fixed. Thanks!
