Little off topic...

Looking into car audio. I want a Blaupunkt RPD550 head, 50 watts max over 4 channels. I also want 2 MB Quart 4 inch speakers, says it needs RMS of 30-70 watts, and the 4x6 MB Quart in the back parcel deck would need 30-70 watts. Would I need an amplifier to power these speakers, or would the head unit be enough?

I'm quite sure you will find more knowledge on this subject by posting it in the Audio Forum.

Good luck,

Sorry Larry..

Unfortunately the Car Audio forum is not visited frequently, and I have posted their before without any replies whatsoever. Might as well give it another try.

I don't think you would really need an amplifer to power them. I am sure the head unit will be enough to power them.

Kyle,

I'm running 2 5.25" MB Quarts on the rear deck of my 300D. They are driven by a 100 watt PPI amplifier. I also managed to install a pair of 3" drivers in the A-pillars, at the bottom near the seatbelt spool. These are driven by an Alpine 50 watt amp. What's cool about this is that sound travels upward through the pillars and out the upper seat belt orifices...right next to your ear! The head unit is only 35 watts peak, with four 4" speakers in the front, so I have a decent 8-speaker system.

I suppose this is a long way of saying that you'd be happier with the Quarts driven by a separate amplifier. There's considerable cabin noise to overcome with these models.

No cash

The problem is I have no cash. If I get a big enough head unit, like 200 watts, would that be enough to cover it all?

Eric:

I have to work on Saturday, but I'm free on Sunday if you want to get together. Sounds fun...

I'll send you a private message with my cell number.

Kyle:

If you can find a head unit that cranks out 200 watts, I would buy it. Do they even make those?

Yes!

Many head units crank 200 wats plus! The one I am looking at is 50 watts max, over 4 channels, equating to 200 watts. Others have 57 watts over 4, and some even 60 watts over 4. They are around. Of course, at RMS they are about 20.
