$$$$$$$$?
Less than $14,000 over a period of 15 years, seems like a pretty good deal to me. You would have probably gone through at least two lesser cars in the same 15 years and at the end of each of those car's useful life ended up with a pile of scrap! Just a thought!

Billy Bob is rright. My mothetr in law had a 79 300SD bought new and I sold it in 2001 with just 115,000 miles on it. She was anal and kept all receipts from day one. I added them up and came to average of $700/year in repairs and maintenance and car would last another 23 years the way it was treated.

Wow!
What amazes me is the maintenance that went into this car. Has anyone noticed that brakes were replaced about every 9,000-10,000 miles? Also, this car was in the shop about every month on the average. I wonder if all these repairs were necessary or could it have been a lemon?
Otherwise, a very nice looking car. |

This car also had alot of repairs at low mileage that it shouldn't have needed:
Reseal steering box @ 160K Replace front engine seal & rebuild transmission @ 176K Injection pump & P/S pump @ 193K Just seems kinda strange to me, as all the items listed above are original in my car. |

Value/Beauty is most often in the eye of the beholder!
Before Rap music and Dot.Com millionaires by the millions, MB was know throughout the world for the "value" these automobiles and the engineering provided their owners. Cars that routinely lasted in fine function and form for many, many miles and years was precisely what many people paid the higher upfront costs for, they anticipated that the engineering and machinery would go the proverbial distance. It would be very interesting to quantify the average vehicle/miles the these cars rack up compared to other makes, it would not surprise me if on average, MB vehicles have run longer and better than any other car ever made. That is not based on any bias other than the bias towards superior engineering for which Germany has a well deserved reputation.
“Value” is an almost ephemeral quality that many people view differently but much like another ephemera, obscenity, is impossible to define but you know it when you see (have/drive) it! Not surprisingly a common theme expressed by value conscious owners is that the more time you spend in and around these vehicles the more you discover to appreciate, if not usual the dependability and ergonomic sensibility it is often the more subtle engineering, mechanical and aesthetic subtleties that only become apparent over time, much like an appreciation for a 75 year old single malt or a soul mate. And like so much of our existence in this realm the more you put into a relationship well you know….. Good Luck and enjoy! P. S. It will be most interesting to see over time whether the current Damiler/Chrysler will be able to maintain such hard earned laurels in the constantly evolving marketplace of today and the future? P. P. S. I would not be surprised if the PO had a relationship with their local dealer that was financially advantageous to the dealer! Some folks prefer give a trusted dealer a free hand at maintenance/repair regardless of cost deferring to the dealerships expertise. Last edited by Billybob; 12-01-2002 at 07:27 PM. |

I appreciate all of your thoughful remarks. Indeed, what I found interesting is the frequency of brake repair, especially a driving environment of the wide open wild west of Nevada. Must have had to stop abruplty for those jack rabbits.

In for service every month? I think not! The car didn't see the shop for 9 years, from 1990-1999.

FWIW, that "injection pump" at 193k must be a typo. The cost was less than $400, and a rebuilt IP would cost $800-1200 plus labor to install. Maybe they meant the fuel lift pump, or labor to R&R the IP and re-seal it (the gaskets tend to leak after 15+ years.)
Oh, I bet the new tranny was not necessary. It probably only needed fluid, filter, a re-seal, and the vacuum lines checked. It is crazy for a tranny to fail (loss of one or more gears, or massive slipping) at only 176k! Otherwise the car looks VERY nice! Wow, too bad I don't like 126's. Bet it goes for $7-9k... |

Many M-B's tranny's fail at 175Kmi. Earlier than that I would question, not 175 and beyond. Otherwise, the maintenance does seem pretty good with the exception of that IP...
