85 190D2.2 Starting Problem
Having a starting problem. How do I check if its the relay or glow plugs.
Also how do you check the injection pump? Thanks Dan.

Dan:
If the light comes one, stays on the appropriate time, and then goes off and stays off, everything is working properly. If the light flashes, either during the glow period or after, you have at least one glowplug not drawing the correct current. If the light doesn't come on at all, and the car won't start (it could just be the dash bulb, after all!), you have several glowplugs out. Check for voltage at the glowplugs while in pre-glow. DON'T short them, you will fry the relay. If you have no voltage (should be about 12 V), the relay or fuse is bad. The 80A fuse is on the relay, held down by two knurled screws. This is usually what is wrong, check if first. It tends to crack in use, so isn't connected, but looks OK until you unscrew it. If the fuse is good, check the resistance of the glow plugs -- should be 0.8 ohm, I think. Bad ones will have higher, lower, or infinite resistance. A shorted plug will blow the 80A fuse. If any are bad, replace all of them rather than just the bad one, saves trouble. Peter
