Sheepskins: what a difference!
It's been dropping into the single digits overnight here in Nordic Wildsconsin and the honey beige leather (not Tex) seats have been a little chilly on my backside so I knuckled under and ordered sheepskins from adsitco at $139 a piece. It took all of 2 business days for them to arrive.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! First and foremost I think that they add a layer of cushioning so I can hold off on rebuilding my seats. Secondly, they really warm up fast! Along with the excellent heater in the car, after I let her warm up for a while in the morning she's toasty and ready to go. |
Yes I agree! I love my sheepskins. The PO I believe bought them with the car new. They are old and are pretty ugly, but I don't care. They're very nice and warm. I'm putting mine on today.

I heard that if your leather is worn, that sheepskins can make it worse because the innerside of the skin is pretty rough (so it "grips to the seat) and has the effect of sandpaper on the seat.
Is this just a rumor, or does anyone have any actual experience with this? |
Speedy, makes sense.
But, that's why you spend the extra bux and buy an cover that fits PROPERLY. A good fitting cover doesn't move around on the seat; it fits like a glove :D BTW....I have both front searts covered and just ordered a drivers side seat for my dads's Lexus....from the same place I bought mine, which I HIGHLY recommend! www.sheepskinexperts.com |
My sheep skins are not rough on the bottom, they have a cloth sewn on the back with the beautiful 3 pointed star as a pattern in it! :) So I don't have to worry about any wear on the seat. And I've got Tex as well, which is tough as we all know.

If moneys tight take a look at Sam's club sheepskins $58 pair
Great deal for the price with headrest covers included. |
I had a sheepskin cover on my drivers seat, but I took it off because it was dirty and was starting to smell. I would have to admit that sheepskin seat covers do make the seat warmer when cold. I did however noticed that they made my clothes smell bad when I went on long trips and I would sweat alot. I am tempted to get some new ones sometime when I get the money for the custom fit ones.

Fuzz
I had some, probably fake, sheepskins on a car I had about 10 years ago. Man did they fuzz up my clothes.
I was thinking about getting some to take the chill off during the winter, but they are a little pricey and I can't stand the fuzz. Advice. JCD |
I would love to get a set for the front and rear seats, but am afraid to check the price.
Are they easy to install? What do you do around the head rest posts? Poke holes? |
Dave,
Yep....somehow make a small hole for the posts to go thru. No biggie...you're suppose to do this. Prices for mine were $99 a seat. I didn't buy the armrest or headrest covers tho. Chris '85 300SD |
Mine are fitted for the MB, they are actualy MB brand. They have the holes in the top for the head rest posts to go through. The PO said they were expensive, but he didn't give me any numbers. Mine do not fuzz up, maybe the fuzzing was due to them not actually being wool? I don't have anyproblems with this. Only thing is don't wear shorts with them on, your legs get itchy.

A Delicate Situation
Yep;
I've been thinking about sheepskins too. I talked about it so much that a very conciderate friend got me, what he thought, was what I wanted. Here I go sounding ungrateful; The Seatcovers he got me were from PepBoys, they were like nylon or something, and my clothes almost recoiled at the thought of how much fuzz and dye they were going to encounter if I used these covers. Plus, they didnt even fit on the seats properly, so they slid up, off, down, etc. A real shame, because the gift was an excellent idea! How do I replace his gift with what I really want without offending him? Plus, my driver's seat and armrest are starting to show a little wear, so the covers would have added cosmetic benefit. Another question; for those of you that have the light grey (ash?) MB tex interior, did you go for the natural color sheepskins or the ones dyed to match the interior of the car? Which looks better? Thanks, J |
I've worn through several sets of sheepskins, I love them. I haven't put them on my Mercedes yet, but Christmas is coming (hint, hint.)
I'm also a complete DIY and hate throwing things out. Putting the two together, I take old ones, cut the back and straps off, and now change oil in the lap of luxury:D |

I still have the pair my 83 300D came with. They are in decent shape, I have them in a box, havn't seen them in a while. If anyone's interested, I'll take them out and get a couple pix.
