240 D Oil Use

I've had this 240 for 5 months now and continue to add oil often. My question is...Is it possible for the oil / air separator near the intake to clog so that oil gets burned?

Seems to have power and actaully smokes about as much as my 350 SDL which doesn't use oil.

In all likelihood, the oil separator is effect, not cause.

The only way to know, is to do a compression check and leak down test. During the leakdown, you can listen for escaping air. If it comes from crankcase, it's rings/piston/cylinder related, if from exhaust, it's exhaust valve and if from intake manifold an intake valve. If you have good compression and good leakdown, it is from valve guides.

Good luck,

I don't think the clogging of the separator would have any effect on the amount of oil burned. How much oil is it using? Some engines just seem to use more than others and it is perfectly normal. I would say 1qt every 1K is "normal", 1qt every 500miles marginal, and anything less than that there is another problem. Also some engines like to use the first 1/2 to 1 qt and then it seems to stabilize. RT

My 240D will use a little oil when run at 80 mph for miles on end on the interstate.

Chris:

Make sure you don't have a leak before assuming you are burning the oil. A drip once a minute or so is a quart in 500 miles in city driving.....

It is possible that a clogged oil separator will cause more oil consumption, but the usual failure is a leak so that the oil either runs out on the ground around the o-rings on the return tube or down the intake around the 0rings in the air filter housing. Also, if the foot valve on the drain tube is bad, the oil will spill over into the intake.

I define a little as about a qt in 750 to 1000 miles. It only seems to use it when run pretty much wide open, don't notice the oil usage when the car is just used around town.

Apparently I was overly concerned. Mine only uses a quart between 500 and 1000 miles depending on how much I run it at 65 -70.

No leaks.

I've been using Rotella 15W40. Would 20W50 burn less?

Engatwork,

That's the trouble with using nondescript terms. I would define 1 quart in 700 miles as "some" oil usage. I would define little as the 1 quart my two 300SDs use in 7500 to 10,000 miles.

Thanks for the clarification on the oil usage PE. I will keep it in mind next time I use a description like that.
It seems to me that the turbo five cylinders do not use oil like the 240 when run at interstate speeds for extended periods of time.

The 240s will use oil at freeway speeds as they are lower geared than other models. They are reving pretty good at freeway speeds. At hot idle, carefully take off the oil cap and see how much blow-by there is. As the rings wear more, you will get more crancase pressure. If it smokes alot with the cao off, then the rings are worn. Chris

If you mean smoke from the oil cap no it doesn't.

Thanks for all the help.
