Does your diesel buck and shimmy on cold mornings?

My '83 240D carries on like a thing possessed when first started up on cold mornings...anyone have similar experiences? Anyone suggest a "cure"?

Oh Yeah, Mine does too! I saw a post a while ago about replacing the engine shocks that helped someone a lot, along with the engine mounts. Also, you might increase your idle a little, that helped some with mine. I'll get around to the mounts & shocks on mine one of these days when I have some time.

you may need new glowplugs. If one is still drawing enough current to make the relay work properly but not heating enough, it will miss on that cylinder. My Volvo has one plug I cannot reach (need a lift so I can get under and behind unless I want to remove the injection pump), so it always thumps when cold. I just crank til it runs and keep my foot on it until I can borrow a lift.

Make sure your valves are adjusted properly, too.

"like a thing possessed"

Hey Jim,

I too am in the Wash, DC area (Falls Church to be exact).

Without a doubt my car is noisier during the first 2-3 minutes of operation on a cold morning. (below 30F)

I recently put in all new Glow Plugs (2 were bad for sure) and the newer designed relay which is suppose to keep GP's on for up to 3 min.
AS I was having much trouble with start-ups under 45 deg.F

Now she starts at 20 deg. without any hesitation what so ever.
I do idle-up a bit during startup.

Is your car hard to start or easy to start but noisy? Does it move around excessively?
