What were you experiencing in your SDL that made you change the seals? A rough idle?

It would get an intermitent rough idle every now and then.

I had read a few posts where other people had replaced them because of a rough idle problem.

It idles very well and I think it even sounds more crisp.

Stupid question, but I'm ignorant.

What function do these seals provide?

Well, there are two things that I replaced.

There are six o-rings,one for each delivery valve holder that keeps the fuel in from leaking outside the pump.

And inside the pump are these little copper gaskets that seal the top of the barrel and plunger. when these little copper gaskets leak you don't get the same amount of fuel to each cylinder, thus the rough idle

FYI, there is a very specific torque procedure on the barrels if you do this job. If not done properly the idle may be worse. Details are in the TDM (tech data manual), or in the diesel archives at MBZ.org...

You are correct, the torque is 35 newton meters.

Actually, the TDM spec is 30-35Nm... BUT you don't just screw it down. The footnote states:

"To obtain a correct seat of delivery valve holder sealing rings, tighten delivery valve holder to 30Nm and release, tighten once again to 30Nm and release again, then finally tighten to 30Nm + 5Nm. Excessive tightening may cause a leak on elements at low and high pressure end by distortion of the injection pump housing."

But if your car is running fine, relax. If anyone does this in the future, I'd follow the procedure above... the MB engineers didn't create the weird procedure for the fun of it!

Best regards,

Did doing this have any effect on idle knock or was yours relatively quiet anyway ? Mine seems to have a single cylinder knock at idle, goes away under accel, idle is smooth, good mpg, just noisy. Yeah I know its a diesel but ? maybe I will replace them anyway, cant hurt huh ?

vlung, are you sure the idle knock is fuel related? Noisy valve lifters are very common on OM60x engines. Using synthetic oil helps a lot of the time, and if not, the offending lifter must be replaced. I had one that got worse and worse but after I replaced them, it's reeeaaaalllly quiet at idle!

Oh, wow, something is way wrong with your car. An OM60x is practically silent compared to the OM617. When warm, passerby should almost be able to mistake it for a gas engine (which NEVER happens on ANY 617.) New injectors need to be matched to each other, so either buy a set and take them to a diesel shop for matching, or take your set to a shop for a cleaning/test/rebuild and pressure matching. If set within 1-2 bar of each other the idle should be verrrry smooth... with good motor mounts you should not feel the engine idle at all. Also, the sound encapsulation panels under the engine & tranny really help keep the idle noise down, and road noise too.

Where did you get your torque value?
My MB factory manual and cd makes no mension of torque-loosen-retorque? And it also says a straight 35NM?

doesnt seem to be lifters, have tried diff oil, when I loosen inj line on 3 or 4 it quiets a little,NOT a rod knock,Seems to be maybe a weak or broken spring in the injector,Just fishing kind of,I have put about 6000 miles on this car,No change in the noise,no change in performance, pretty consistant knock at idle, just seems a little loud for this car. I may pull apart those injectors and have a look, remans from mercedes are only $42.00 ea so maybe just change em. Are these motors normally quiet at idle say compared to a 617 series, just sold a 123 sedan that is Much quieter than mine but not nearly as peppy on the road.

I've been living with intermittant injector knock since i've owned the car. There is no performance or MPG difference, just an annoying knock every once and a while. I'm cheap, so I live with it.
