Question new purchase

I have always liked diesel cars and had the opportunity to get an 83 123 diesel. I like it very much and think I ma hooked. It is a light cream with the tan leather interior. I am kinda worried about the miles on it. It has 285,000. Car runs good from what I can tell but since this is my first diesel I am not really sure on what to look for. Any thoughts on maintenance or parts that will start wearing out with that kinda age.

Thanks

I'm new to diesels also, but someone not too long ago told me, "If it ain't broke, dont fix it."

Is there anything that doesn't seem right about your car?

If not, then don't worry about it. Make sure you always have clean oil, good oil pressure, and proper temperature gauge so as not to overheat.

If it starts right up, then your compression should be ok.

20 year old parts are going to age. Do you have any records in order to determaine what parts have been replaced?

Use the search function in the top right of the main page, and you can find information on just about any problems you might have. There are some very knowledgable people on this forum. If you need parts, you can check fastlane or parts shop, (top center of page), that maintain this forum.

Congratulations and enjoy! Post some pictures.

As long as it has been maintained, then you still have many miles of driving ahead of you. Make sure the oil is changed every 3000 miles, and if you live in a colder climate, using a block heater helps alot in starting.

Might also be worthwhile if you have a reputable mechanic in your area to look it over for you.
I did this with mine and he discovered things that I would never have noticed i.e. a "close to leaking" fuel line from teh tank to the main feed. Cost me 8.00 for the special rubber line and I put it on myself.
If he can make a list of things for you then you can take your time and fix little functional things over time without having to spend thousands on one big visit to the shop. Heck, my mechanic even prioritized the items for me...
Congratualtions on the new purchase. Using the search feature of this site will keep you busy for the next month or two...
