How bad is a rr. wheel bearing to replace?
 

My 83 300D had the rumble when leaning into turns from the right rear this weekend. I got around to jacking all 4 wheels one at a time to check them and there is no doubt, the right rear is loose. I'm getting the feeling the manual makes everything sound like you need special tools and a helper named 'Helmut' for every little job. Here's the deal: I have every tool imaginable that a mechanic who works on buses for a living would need. Is there something I'm going to have to borrow to get this job done? When you buy the 'kit' from the online parts stores, does it come with everything(seal, both bearings and races etc.) or is stuff I'll need missing? Any advice appreciated!!!

Also, is there anyone in Ct. or Western Mass. who has the wheel bearing socket and would like to let me borrow it? :D

I believe that the rear wheel bearing job is not a DIY job. In fact, I also believe that it is not a job for most shops because of the special tools needed that they won't have. The easiest solution is to buy a new or used axle half and replace the whole thing. I also have the number somewhere of a place that rebuilds them for $99. For that price it's hardly worth even attempting it.

Not drive-axle shaft....wheel bearings.

I have tackled this job before and I have the tool to do it with. It can be a DIY job if you are not afraid of hard work because it takes about 300 lbs of pressure to crush the sleeve when you are tighting up the hub nut. If you promise in blood to return it , I will let you borrow the tool for the shipping cost.
