Question Bottom Attachment of ATF Dipstick Tube. 81 300D

Preparing to change ATF and filter. Found that I have to unbolt the ATF dipstick tube from the ATF pan. This is not mentioned in the threads nor the Haynes manual. Is it tricky? What size is the bolt? Any potential problems? Should this be removed first? Any danger of leakage here later?

Thanks in advance for any advice about this procedure.

You have the four bolt tranny pan - same as on the 240D. Nothing tricky about it. I vaguely seem to remember it is 15 mm hex head banjo bolt. You will need two new crush washers to reinstall when you button everything back up. Don't forget the torque converter.

Hey Jim,
I was just under my "new" old 1980 300D this weekend and thought about changing all the tranny fluids.
Is the drain for the torque converter via the allen plug on the bottom of the housing?

The drain for the torque converter is that allen head bolt. You will probably have to use a screw driver or other tool to turn the converter housing around so that the drain is at the bottom. You need a crush washer for that plug , also.

The banjo bolt on my '81 300CD is 19mm and the four bolts for the tranny pan are 13mm. And as was stated in an earlier post, make sure you use new crush washers. On an aftermarket filter kit I once bought they had included the wrong size crush washers (all three were wrong) and the gasket was of poor quality. I would assume the filter was also of poor quality. I had to make a run to the MB dealer and get the right parts. I hate doing that in the middle of the job.
