headlight wattage?

I want to replace the headlights in my 240D. What wattage are they? Will putting in Hella #70477 lamps with H2 bulbs overload the wattage? I want to be sure to prevent electrical gremlins.

If they are US lights, you can use either Halogen sealed beams or H4 replacements with no ill effect. Either of these approaches will improve lighting.

If you are wanting to use H4 replacements AND 100Watt bulbs, THEN you should use relays, with heavy wiring to the battery.

There is another thread going here that is talking about just using a sealed beam in the place of the fog light. This is for US lights of course. I had never realized that the fog light could be replaced with a sealed beam from the old twin headlight systems.

This would be a very economical upgrade with a number of possibilities. All you need is a few sealed beams from the auto parts store, preferably Halogens, and a little wiring.

See the thread covering the four headlight conversion.

Good luck,

I installed the euro lights in my 79 240D and used 80/100, H4s. I ran those for maybe 5 months then I started reading this forum and realized that might be pushing it and switched over to Philips Plus 30s. They are great and seem almost as bright as the over wattage ones. Very much of an improvement over the sealed beams.

Larry..... Thanks for the tip about the fog light thread, that sounds interesting
