617 Head Prechamber puller

I'm rebuilding an '83 300 TDT head and need to pull the prechambers. None of the local machine shops can do this. All the tools I've seen (IMPCO) cost a fortune. The threads look like 22mmx1.0mm pitch but I cannot find a bolt this size (surfed the web and local industrial bolt supplies). A machine shop gave me a $50 quote to cut these theads but I didn't see a furnace in the shop for post maching heat treatment. I've been told '75 to '86 Nissan cars use this pattern on their CV joints at the wheel hubs and I thought about welding this to a puller. Any ideas on where to find a bolt before I hit the junk yards?

How about taking the head to a shop where they have the tool and paying them to just pull the prechambers?

A shop pulling the pre-chambers is the best bet. They can be a pain even with the tool, and are just about impossible without it!

Once the "lock ring" is off/out I have seen them "driven out from the combustion chamber side.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks to all.

To good fellow: I visit F&J European off Belaire Blvd. for parts. I'll take the head to Superheads which is right around the corner for a quote.

They really are *not* hard to pull,

I remember someone finding the threads were the same as some bicycle hub. So, they used a scavanged hub with a slide hammer. Of coures, removing the locking collar is a must. Should be some MB shops around with these tools-they are not so rare.
Machine shop will not have the special tools.

Where to find a bolt ? How about a Bolt Supply place ? Look under Bolts in the yellow pages... in Austin there is " Austin Bolt" , Capitol Bolt... etc... they have special /big/unusual bolts and lots of other very interesting stuff... I have read that there are two versions of the removal tool.. one a knock out and the other a screw arrangement...

Be sure to remove your glowplugs first...:D

leathermang 01-25-2003 01:43 PM

I have long wanted to make one of these tools... and have begged people to get good measurements and send them to me if they had access to the tool... Hope you will post whatever info you get about the tool..... Thanks

Gilly, Sure, you Have the tool to play with ! ... remember, life is just an excuse to collect more tools....

samiam4 01-25-2003 03:02 PM

I used somebody else's tools last two times....

If I was in your situation, I'd buy the collar remover and try a dead blow hammer since you have the head off the car.

Never paid too much attention to the DYI toolmakers. ALlways figured I would buy them.

Michael , when a tool costs $325 and you only need it once or twice in a lifetime it is not wrong to consider making it yourself...
Of course the definition of DYI varies considerably... I have welding equipment, including tig, lathe and mill.... If you can describe something it is likely I can make one....

Oh resource ful!

Ok, let see. To get the keeper out you need something that will lock down in the two notches. Measure them and make something out of steel that fits. You'll need to bore a hole through the piece and put the same threads that are on your injectors(XX.0X1.0)mm Make it out of hex stock and then you can install it, and use a wrench to remove the collars.

You just need a cheap slide hammer and drill the bolt or what ever you made that had the injector threads on it, for the slide hammer.

I thought the tools were lots cheaper than that-maybe from more than one source.

Go to this site:
http://www.********.com/sirtools/tools_benz.html

Look for M007 and M0046. You can click on the little camera icon and it will show you pictures of the tools. If you wanted to buy them, it would be less than $100, plus you would need your own slide hammer. M007 is for removing the ring, and M0046 attaches to a slide hammer for pulling the chambers, and yes PLEASE pull the glow plugs first.

I need measurements... or paper with outlines marked... I need metric thread measurements particularly of holes... outside metrics can be measured after squeezing a piece of paper against them and then measureing the outside diameter...Also the screw type preC exractor seems to be angled at its base.. need that angle..

Those are not bad prices ... but did not see the screw type shown... I think it was the $300 plus cost I saw somewhere...a person can apply more pressure , if needed , with a screw than hand hammer.... same with the pin extractor on front of engine...
But a simple bolt with appropriate back end would hook to a slide hammer... and would not cost more than $5.....Gilly, just accept that some of us are cheap... or enjoy making useful things out of metal....:D

Sorry,

You'll have to do the measurements. You can search diesel diegest at mb.org. I know there was discussion about tools and threads a while back.

I loved my metal cutting experience too! Lots of fun!
