1985 Mercedes Benz 300 d with 532698 miles WOW!!!
As my precious 1985 300 d turbodiesel is off to a good mechanic Enrique at MB motors, you all have to check out ebay item 2401153489 1985 300 d turbodiesel. I personally don't think it looks bad (those are 86-91 wheels) but look at that mileage and shape and its still going. Now since all of us have good taste (Mercedes Benz) and average to way above average in the intelligence catergory (diesel) what do we recall about economics 101?Invest money in assests that appreciate and reduce capital in assests that depreciate.Equate-how many cars over 18 years would (or did) go through driving 532698 miles and still look like this (let alone standing-remember the 80's were not kind to American cars)?I'm so far counting on 2 hands. Not any more and if anyone says to you like they did me here in B-town,I got two words for them (be creative).

All I can say is "wow".
Everytime I see one with 1/2 million on it, I'm tempted to snag it. What do you think it will go for? I need a parts car. I'd probably have to sleep in it however cuz I just went from 5 to 4 and my family thinks I'm crazy. Don

I'm high bidder on it right now, but hopefully someone will go higher. Don't need another project yet. Not even done with the last one.

Wow. That one's been ridden hard in its lifetime. Not kept up cosmetically often means not kept up mechanically.
At least one previous owner was a heavy person. Ken300D |

Ken:
Wouldn't 532k indicate that it WAS kept up mechanically? How could one achieve that type of mileage if it was abused? The seat does look tired though huh? Don

It's just a matter of perception and personal opinion. Perhaps only the most recent owner has not kept up the car. And I'm referring to the missing trim strip, the missing rear bumper side cap, the rust, etc.
Also, I like to think of 500,000 miles as "half-life" on the 300D. You need to pry an answer out of the seller regarding the "mechanical problems" mentioned. He is only stating the condition as "it runs". On another note about the seat - now that I have refurbished my driver's seat with new spring box assembly and pad, I am very careful to lower myself gently onto the seat. I have a theory that "weight challenged" people usually manage the ability to stay standing up by locking their knees. When it comes time to sit down in the good ole 300D, they just unlock their knees and its "look out beloooowwwww......." That's about the worst thing you can do to those delicate little springs. Why is this a private auction?
Good luck Don.

hahahaha that's funny. It's so true though. I've seen some new MB's with such messed up seats and I just can't help but wonder.

Come on guys, give that seat a break. I've seen a lot worse with a lot less miles. Nevertheless, I always felt MB could have done much better with their seats. They should have learned a valuable lesson from Peugeot a long time ago---the most comfortable seat ever!!!

Ken:
That was good. Very good! I like your definition of a 'half life'. 1/2 million and its only half dead. I'm not chasing that car Michael. I was just bored the other night and threw $199 as a top bid on it. Figured I couldn't go wrong for that for a parts car. Just fixed my seat with the 'pool noodle' theory. Stunned by how good it feels. We'll see if it lasts though. I do lower myself more gently though. Don
