'81 VW Rabbit Diesel ready for the road

I just rebuilt the starter on my 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel. I had not fired her up in about two weeks and the weather has been very cold. Well, for here it's been cold. Anyway, she hit on the first crank and started right up! She is my baby. Long live the VW Rabbit.

Congratulations. My brother bought a diesel Rabbit for $400. Most clackety car I ever heard. Ran and ran and ran. Finally gave it to his niece, who's still driving it.

Perhaps it's an ugly duckling and will one day grow up to be a TDI. Good luck.

Your story brings me back fond memories of my high school car, a 1980 VW Dasher Wagon (diesel). That thing was known to us as "the gutless wonder". If I recall correctly, the car had about 40hp (or at least if felt that way). You couldn't drive highway speeds with the AC on....

The paint and body of that car held up wonderfully, but the engine had its issues (several blown headgaskets).

In retrospect, I believe we had incompetent mechanics working on that car....

Thumbs up Best car I have ever owned!

I am a VW Rabbit Diesel fanatic. I have owned 8 in the last two years. My first one was given to me and it was very nice. 1981, a one-owner with 131,000 miles, mint condition, all service records and then BAMMMMMMM! A '98 Lincoln Continental ended it's life by pulling out in front of me. Hey, I totaled the Lincoln and the Rabbit!

Here are the diesels that I and my family have owned:

1957 GMC 4104 Motor Coach -671 Detroit- sold
1968 GMC 4107 Motor Coach- 318 Detroit-sold
1973 Silver Eagle Motor Coach- 318 Detroit-sold
1975 GMC 4905 Motor Coach- 318 Detroit (Screen wire oil pan!)-sold
1981 Cadillac Sedan de'Ville- V8 Diesel-sold
1972 MB 220D- Gift (had cracked head, Never ran)-sold
1974 MB 240D- Never got to drive it-sold
1981 VW Rabbit LS Diesel- totaled-sold
1984 VW Rabbit L Diesel- Ran but used it for parts-sold
1980 VW Rabbit L Diesel- New Engine with spun rod bearing-parts
1980 VW Rabbit Truck Diesel- sold
1981 VW Rabbit Truck Diesel- Parts- sold
