under dash question?
I pulled out my glove box and under dash panel on the passenger side in order to replace the tube running from the thermostat sensor to the other side. (The middle section had disintegrated and Larry Bible had posted about how to fix this problem. Thanks, Larry).
Anyway, under the dash panel is a large compressor type object with tubes running to it. One of the tubes is leaking. What is this piece of machinery and do I need to have it checked? Blair

if it's rectangular in shape with 2 pipe fittings going out the top and 2 going out the bottom, and wrapped in insulation, it's your A/C expansion valve.
is your AC system holding a Freon charge? If not, that's possibly why.

No, it is not holding its charge. I have to add freon every summer.
Should I attempt repair or take it to my indy mechanic? Blair

There are some orings in there that sound like they need to be replaced. This, in my opinion, is a diy'er type of job. The type of oring (material of construction) will be determined whether you are running r12 or r134. Pretty straightforward job if you system has already leaked down. Otherwise you will need to refrigerant removed and captured prior to breaking the lines loose.

it is best to replace the reciever/dryer if the system has been 'opened'. freon plays h*ll on the insulating foam. reinsulate the valve if you can.
