Weight of a 300 engine?

Does anyone know the weight of the engine in a 1983 300SD?
How does the weight compare to a later model deisel and to a gas engine?

I don't know the exact weight, but I would not be surprised if the later, aluminum head engines shave off 20% or so of the engine weight.

To me, the loss of long term durability, with the aluminum head, makes this too much of a price to pay. The aluminum heads offer all sorts of problems that are just not present in the old iron head/iron block 616/617 engines.

Good luck,

Just a guess...

Most iron V8s are 600-700lbs. My V8 diesel is @1000lbs. I would guess the MB at 600lbs, fully dressed. Likely about 20-25% heavier than a gasser. RT

I've got a 300D turbo with an automatic bolted to it hanging in the garage on an engine lift. The lift is set at 1/2 ton and the lift is dealing with it but you can tell it is a load.

Is the engine weight for your car on this list?

Jim, I had a shot at posting first on this question.... It took all I could do to resist saying " It will crush your engine hoist"...

I wonder why they did not list the 617 ....? Pretty much listed everything else....

LOL - Greg I kept expecting to see that boom bend when I lifted it the first time but all my hot rod buddies said no way that thing weights 1/2 a ton. Also, they taught me that when I do drop the engine/tranny in the car to leave the lift stationary (while the engine/tranny is in the air ready to go into the car) and move the car underneath the engine/tranny - makes sense to me.

Sometimes things like that are ' rated' in advertisements at the most it will lift ( in the short arm position)... then they have pins so the lifting arm can be extended... which can catch some novices in a bad situation...because it may have significantly less safe lifting ability in the stretch mode... Just mentioning this for those new to hoisting...
That is a good idea when the car is movable...I made an 'a' frame with four large wheels on it for my own use because I seldom have any help... and I use a chain hoist so my load is always centered over the wheels... and big wheels (like 8 inch) because I often have to work on ground instead of concrete...

Here's a post from the past:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=31701

Similar to your engine, but not quite.

Your turbo engine is going to have some heavier components, not to mention the turbo itself.

Another point is that in most cases the engine comes out with the transmission still attached. Now you're talking some real weight!
