300D engine shock absorber

I went to install a new engine shock in my 300D and am having trouble compressing the rubber bushings enough to start the nut on the shock rod. I can find no mention of this part in my haynes manual or on my service CD. the part #seems to indicate I have a part for a 240 series; might a 300 part havbe a longer shaft? 3/8 of an inch would make it quite simple. I guess I will check again with the parts people to make sure. If I cant get a shock with a longer shaft, I am thinking of trying to use the torque of the motor to compress the bushing, if I can find someone fool enough to lie under the car and wrench while I apply brake and throttle simultaneously. Any bright ideas? Or even better, successful experience? thanks

I would think it is the wrong shock. On my 1977 300D, it was a piece of cake.

300D engine shock

I called the parts guy, and the part I recieved is a superceded part, but it is supposed to fit. Before it was ordered, Mercedes was called to be sure the new part was the right one. VIN #s indicate using this part as well. Only problem is the bushings have to be compressed about 6mm to start the nut. maybe I can sand off the bushings to get clearance.

when the shock is assembled on my bench, the working end berely assembles, leaving no room to sandwich the engine bracket, and the standing end has about 9/16'' free space for the bushing to slide before contacting the shock and begin being effective. I still think it is the wrong shock. MOnday I will try to convince the parts guy again. Next stop, wrecking yard for a used part.

The engine shocks that I purchased here from FastLane worked fine. You might consider that as a source.

You know that there's an engine shock on both sides, right?

I guess that might depend on what year you have.

300D engine shock

Well, I finally got my engine shock installed. First I was trying to put in upside down. I corrected that error, and it still wouldn't fit. I finally found the right spot in my service CD, and after staring at it for sometime, realized that both big bushings go on top, the standing end, and both small bushings go on the working, bottom end. Big dummy here signing off.
