98 e300 td 170K what's it worth?
Hi everyone,
I am in the process of looking at a 1998 e300 turbo diesel in excellent condition. Just came off trade in and is one owner. Is it worth $17000 even though is has 170000miles? Would appreciate opinions and knowing if there is anything I should be looking for. Thanks. |

It's a bit tough to value one of these with such high miles - most have less than 100K, generally a lot less. That said, examples with ~100K fewer miles abound for about $24K. At $17K for the high milage example, you're looking at about 17 cents depreciation per mile relative to the lower milage cars. That's a reasonable figure for an E-class.

Search the archives
The E300 has been discussed quite a bit in recent months, so the trouble spots are mentioned in the archives. My troubles have included glow plugs, dash board cracked ($1000), and rear window regulators. Gilly has also mentioned front wheel bearings on the W210.
As for value, you didn't give us much to go on. Dealer / private party, condition, optional equipment, and your location all play a part. That said, I would guess 17K to be about the top end.

I missed one two weeks ago in Virginia. The car had about 110000 on it. Sold for 14000. It was a 1997 no damage no options.
Tried to get another out of Illinois Thursday it had 165000 and sold for 11000. It was a 1996 no options and needed the interior door pulls replaced in the rear. I continue to look and will be the first to call sooner or later. Have a great day Paul 1999E300DT 90000 |

There was also a few on ebay but someone either bought them before me, or the seller was unreachable.

1998 e300 worth
Thanks to all that responded, I decided to get the car, it is in mint condition and has many options. The car is going to cost 16,000, the first thing that I am going to try to do is change the trans fluid.
The dealer claims that is is sealed for the life of the car and does not require changing. Since I like to prolong the life I am going to do it. |

acerejo,
I agree with the idea to change the transmission fluid. I did mine at 60,000 miles. The dealer told me the same thing, but I told him I was pretty sure the manufacturer's concept of the life of this car and mine was a little off. It is not cheap, cost me about $190. But it seems you need some very special tools to do it, so I paid the price. Good luck with your car, and keep us posted as it would appear you are out on the frontier of high mileage with one of these and we are all hoping they are as sturdy and reliable as the 1980's vintage machines. Jim

I think this is the one that Turbo was refering to that sold last week on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6335&item=2403660183&rd=1 If you adjust for the increased mileage you arrive in the 13-14K range. This does not compensate for options but gives you the same year and model to work from - Good luck!!
