603 delivery valve
Hi all. Need to know a few things. First, can a bad valve seat there cause a miss that is not constant? Anyone done this have any tips. Last, Any one have the special socket for the job and could I work out a deal to borrow it. $40 dollars for a tool I hope I only ever need once makes my wallet cry. Thank you all for the help.

A bad pressure valve can give you an intermittant miss, but usually gives serious injector knock (nailing) and very rough idle as the cylinder is dead at low engine rpm.
Try changing the idle speed if you have the adjuster (up by the brake booster, dial with numbers on it, pull out, rotate, push back in). If that helps, it's not the delivery valve. Check the condition of the connector for the idle speed controller, too (three wires on the back of the IP). If loose or dirty, you will get variable idle speeds. And last, but not least, check the engine mounts. They are internal spring/gel filled, and if the glycol leaks out, the engine bounces on the spring at certain speeds. Very rough, goes away as soon as the engine speeds up. The easy way to check is crawl under and take a peek. You must be able to see the angular "wedge" of the metal insert sticking out of the bottom of the otherwise spherical mount. If it is collapsed into the rest of the mount, there is fluid around the mount, or the rim of the upper part of the upper part of the mount is sitting on the frame, the mounts are shot. New ones will eliminate the vibration. Peter

Thanks
The reason I asked is at idle (I have it all the way up) it does nail in between missing. It smoothes out but isn't gone at running speeds. I pulled the injectors this weekend and had them cleaned and calibrated. They were good but two were about 7 bar out of spec. This didn't effect the problem.
Next week I'm having the timing chain and rails replaced and pump timing set. If that doesn't fix it (I was doing for pm anyways) I figure a delivery valve. I think that is a good assumption? Thanks Z

Bingo!
Symptoms are: rough idle, lousy performane below about 1500 rpm, NO SMOKE, good fuel milage, very obnoxious nailing, cylinder is dead, but fuel is delivered when cap nut on injector is loosened, looks like normal devlivery. Procedure (I did this for my 300D -- one pressure valve holder was loose enough to turn by hand, no wrench!) Remove injector lines, both ends. Remove lock rings on IP. Will be stuck, use antiseize going back in. Unscrew pressure valve holder, replace 0-ring and copper seal (it sits on top). Do not loose spring! It stays in the presssure valve holder sometimes. re-install pressure valve holder and torque to 25 ft/lbs THREE times WITHOUT loosening between. Anything else, and they leak, which is what your problem is. Chances are, someone replace a leaking o-ring and didn't torque them down right.....I saved $2000 off the price for this! Re-install lock rings. Re-install injector lines. Leave cap nuts loose, then crank engine at full throttle untill you get fuel at the injectors. Tighten cap nuts and crank till it starts. Problem should be gone. Good luck! Note that you will need new plastic clips for the injector lines, the old ones will break when you unclip them, and I've heard stories about the line cracking if not clipped down. Peter
