Plugged fuel filters and/or algae in the tank, plugging the screen. Replace filters, check for leaks in the suction lines (they are getting old and rotten by now), and if you still have trouble, GENTLY blow compressed air, less than 15 psi, please, down the suction line WITH THE FILLER CAP OFF. You should hear the air bubbling out in the tank.
The that fixes the problem, you need to empty and clean the tank, then treat the fuel with algae killer (see your marine dealer, he knows what it is). Also, if you can run at high speed, just have no power, check the boost contorl lines from the rear of the intake manifold to the ALDA and the overboost vent valve. The line can plug, resulting in no extra fuel. Most likely a fuel starvation problem, though, a bad boost line won't reduce power at high rpm. Peter

I just replaced the fuel filter and prefilter on my '81 300D, and it's markedly peppier now... also, it had a rough idle which has also pretty much gone away now. I too was getting a "hole" in power around 40 mph - just seemed like it couldn't accelerate past 40 without a lot of effort. Once it got up to 50 or so, it was good again... I'm gonna watch it for the next few days and see if the "hole" is really gone...

Just a thought, but have you pulled the air filter housing off to check the turbo? It's pretty quick to just remove the U pipe that goes between the air cleaner and the turbo, and to make sure that the turbo's spinning freely...
Chances are it's okay, but can't hurt to check it...fuel/algae and boost sensors are more likely...good luck!

Market,
Have you checked the fuel strainer in the fuel tank? It screws out from the bottom. You will have to drain the tank first so do it when the tank is almost empty. P E H |

Make sure you have full boost before altering the ALDA setting. It is a huge pain on this car as the adjusting nut is only 3/8" or so from the intake manifold -- you will have to remove the ALDA to adjust it.
More likely you have low boost and/or a leaking boost control line than an out of adjustment ALDA. Peter
