Oil filters?

I am new to this wonderful MBZ diesel mania! I've got a Dodge Cummins diesel, which uses, of course, everything US made.

But the MBZ is a different story. What does it use for oil filters? Is there a US equivalent that is quality? And I mean that I would like quality. There are several US manufacturers of oil filters that Cummins does not recommend and I don't want to run into the same problem with my MBZ.

I truly love this car and I've had it but two weeks! I should have got a MBZ long ago!

Use Mann or Hengst..... don't use Bosch filters though. Fastlane, which you can get to from the top of this page, has what you need for a very good price... order several. I don't think there is a US filter for your car...maybe a Wix, but I would use a German filter in a German car especially since they are so cheap and easy to get.

Forgot to add... if you haven't found it already it's on the back drivers side of engine.... large cartridge filter (about six inches long). The lid is held on by two 13mm(?) nuts.

Just wondering, what filter brand does the dealer provide? I've been buying my filters from the local Benz dealer...I've gotten into the habit of using the filter that the dealer provides, for quite a while (I only use Motorcraft filters in the truck, as well), ever since I had an old diesel Scout that I could only get the oil filters through a forklift dealer

warden - i just had to get an oil filter at the mb dealer (ughh!) and they sold me a mann filter built in the czech republic. it looked exactly the same quality and appearance of the german made mann filters i have seen.
the hengst filters i had previously bought from Fastlane looked better quality overall...

My opinion is that Wix makes the best "american" filter, although they may not even be made in the US.
Also note that the filters which NAPA sells are in fact WIX. They use the same part number except for one number. I think they add a number.

Oh, okay...BTW, one of the local dealers (Autobahn Motors in Belmont) apply an automatic 10% discount to any product purchased for a car that's older than (I believe) 10 years old. I think I pay about $15 for filters from them, but I don't remember...cheaper than the Motorcraft filters I get from Ford! (fortunately, Wallyworld sells Motorcraft filters in the size I need for $10...about the only non Fram filter they sell )...

Just looked in Fastlane; they are certainly cheaper, but I dunno what the price difference would be, including shipping cross-country...

dealer's oil filter. warden i paid 13.75 for it. i thought it was a bit high but certainly of much better quality than one of those 'made in india' STP jobs from Autozone.

i am ordering a few hengst filters from Fastlane for the next changes.

why not Bosch oil filters?

I see one member said not to use Bosch oil filters. I was just wondering why? It figures, I just bought 2 of them! Thanks Mike

Just bought some Mann + Hummel filters, made in Germany, from Caliber Motors at a pretty good price. However, comparing the Mann filter with a NAPA Gold filter, of unknown origin, the NAPA has metal sides both inside and outside the filter, whereas the Mann has metal only on the inside. The caps appear more substantial on the NAPA, too. Also, the paper elements on the inside appear to be the same amount. The Mann comes with the rubber sealing ring AND 3 washers all wrapped in plastic; the NAPA comes with just the rubber ring thrown into the box. So, who knows!

Westkill,

I believe that there was a thread quite a while back 4-6 months where someone had found that many of the Bosch filters were now being made in India and didn't seem to be the quality they once had been. I've never heard of a problem with them but I'll stick with Mann or Hengst.

Just grabbed a Wix for $12.99, as I was due for a change, it came with both washers, and the o-ring. (I won't drop a dime at the local dealer.) The Wix looks to be a decent filter, damn well better be for the price. Pretty sad when a fuel only costs 4 to 5 cents a mile, but a synthetic oil change with a $15 dollar filter can add up to another cent a mile to your driving cost. I figured in my truck I could buy all the parts for an engine overhaul for what it cost to run high dollar oil and filters over it's lifetime. just my .02, .04, and .05 cents.

Cheers, Mack

Dude

I am going to go LarryBible on you and say as long as you change it eveyr 3000 miles, filter brand makes no difference. Use the right type of oil, and yer fine. Purolator, STP, Wix, AlliedSignal. Anything at the McParts store. If you actually think there is a difference between german made paper and tin and indian made where the Mcparts filters are made, try me. Get whatever is cheapest, and change it every 3K. I don't think the Moroccan Taxi drivers who get massive mileage on these cars out "German Made" oil filters on their cars. But if their cheaper, Id go with the German made.
