Timing Chain Question
85 300TDT 295k
How much lateral play is to be expected in a timing chain? I was replacing the oil pan gasket yesterday and while I was there I looked at the TC and noticed that there was about a 1+ mm of lateral movement in the links. Normal? Normal for 295k? Time to change? I should just do it and get it over with. Thanks for your time, Alec.

What counts is when it is running... if you do a search about chain tensioners you will see the discussion about 'ratcheting' tensioners.... it keeps stepping out to take up slack... but inbetween steps oil pressure takes up all slack when engine is started...

I should have been more specific about what I mean by 'lateral movement'. I am not tolking about slack. There is play in the links...in realtion to how the chain sits in the car there is movement front to back. If you hold a link with your fingers you can slide it front to back about 1+mm in relathion to the car. This is perhaps a bit of an oscure question but I've never seen a new/younger chain and dont know what normal is.
Thanks.

The only way to evaluate timing chain wear is to check the stretch on the chain. That you have noticed some lateral looseness there would be cause to dig into that further.

Are you referring to the oil pump chain or the cam/injection pump chain?

L I B M R DUCKS...
engatwork, you're right...that was the oil pump chain in my face. So I guess I'm talking about the oil pump chain. That make a little more sense. Is that amount of 'play' usual per you experience? Boy to I feel dumb. Thanks for the correction.
