New 84 300SD

I just bought an 84 300SD with 177K miles on it. It has some issues that were making me nervous untill I read about them in some posts here. Specifically, they involve an interior that leaks so much that trout could live there, and some tired switchs. The car has sat for at least a year, maybe 2, but when we gave it a jump it fired right up. No smoke at idle or under load, transmission was serviced before being parked, and there are no leaks underneath. No rust under the body, and just a little on the passenger front door and rear fender lip.

Replaced the battery, cleaned out the drain vents near the windshield, and changed the oil, filter and fuel return lines. Should be warm enough this weekend that I can pull out the carpets and starts drying and de-molding the inside.

Now the puppy won't start though. Glowplug indicator doesn't come on. A response on the tech forum suggested the 80 amp fuse in the glow plug relay. I found the relay, where's the fuse? An 80 amp fuse should be hard to miss, but I don't see it.

Thanks in advance.

Jerry

It's that shiny metal piece of metal staring right at you when you open the box. Roughly 2-3 inches long and about 1/4" wide.

Even if it doesn't look blown, they can and do crack. Loosen one or both ends of the 'fuse' and make sure it's "solid", then tighten it back down.

Fuse was ok, it was the relay.

Thanks

Before you replace the relay, extract and insert the 2 connectors plugged into the relay 5 times. There could be an open circuit between the connection pin and the connector socket. The above should make a good connection again.
