Passed on the SDL got a TD

I looked at an 86 SDL last week. It was nice, but not as nice as the owner was thinking. The car had aftermarket crap stuck on it. The owner swore it was factory... chrome eyebrows, unrecognizable grill... A bad area of rust (started by water trapped by the aftermarket bs). Kept trying to work price down. He sold. I picked up a 1981 TD wagon with 188K miles. Seems strong. No shocks in the rear. Don't know if hydro system is shot or what. Otherwise, the rust isn't too bad but will overtake the car within a couple of years.

Was this the special edition SDL? What was special about it?

How much?

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay? I ask because I took an '80 300TD in trade on a SAAB convertible I fixed up to sell. My 300TD sounds a lot like the one you bought. It's a good runner and mechanically sound. It has some small rust spots, but its pretty clean underneith.

Yup. This was the "Special Edition", Concours condition SDL. The special edition was actually special additions that the dealer had stuck on the thing. Other than the dings and rust and seat covers and crack in the console wood... it was Concours ready. Not a bad car at all for an 86, just not what the owner believed it to be. And he seemed a bit resistant to accepting educational assistance (which would de-value his prize) from a low-balling wannabe buyer. Go figure...
The TD is probably a $1500 value. I got it in lieu of a debt.
