83 SD speedo - 85mph?
I was told that 108K miles wasn't the orginal mileage of my 83 SD when I got it. Registered as TMU. It came with an 85mph speedo. Is this the right speedo for this car?
Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

my 83 300d goes to 130, the 77 240d goes to 100, and in my dreams both cars will peg the needle
![]() The speedo in the 300d is pretty much dead on when matched to my GPS. The 240d is off around 9mph at all speeds to fast. When it shows 80mph it is doing 71.5 Tops out at 85.7 showing 95mph. |

The SD wouldn't normally have an 85 mph speedo.
You can look at the shift marks on the speedo face. If you wind your engine up hard, the car should shift right at or before the shift marks. If it doesn't, you've probably got the wrong speedo. There were also different speedos made to match different rear-end ratios, but I think the SD only came with one rear-end. Not sure about that. I've only seen the 85 mph speed in the 240D and in the older 300D non-turbos. |

my 83 300SD has either a 130 or 140 mph speedo. Tops out at an indicated 112mph(probably closer to 105 though)

85mph speedos were on ALL 1982 US model cars. All turbo models from 1983-1985 had the 120mph speedometer!

I drove a 123 with an 85mph speedo last Sunday (see "Drove a 240D..."), and the different speedo was the most difficult thing to get used to...given that, in quite a few other ways, the car was like mine (in mine, the needle's pretty much straight-up at 65), looking down at the speedo and seeing it at like the 2:00 position at 65 took quite a bit of getting used to... |

I have the dreaded 85 speedo meter on my 81 SD it's the only thing I don't like on the car, especialy since my SE has a 160 Speedo meter in it with shift points into fourth at 138.......

FWIW
Whether original or not, if you want to convert from the Joan Claybrook 85 mph speedometer (she was President Carter's Transportation Secretary responsible for this; I should add she did not have a driving license) to the right one, you may want to send the instrument to Palo Alto Speedometer on Emerson Street in CA.
My wife's 1981 380SLC had this abomination (she always complained how the needle would be pegged when she drove it!) and a week at PAS got us the real thing with a new dial and appropriately altered gearing. My many experiences with PAS (car and motorbike instruments) show them to be expensive, but worth it. Seem to recall it ran $100 or so for the SLC 3 or 4 years ago. |

Sixto,
My '80 300SD has a 85MPH speedo but the '78 and '79 have 120MPH speedos. So '80 might have been the first year. I think the 85MPH speedo would read higher if you break off the stop peg. P E H |
