Hood pad installation

Time to finally remove and replace my old hood pad. What did you guys use to remove the old pad and glue? I'm assuming 3M spray adhesive is the best glue but I obviously need to get a clean base to stick it to and am unsure what's best to remove the old glue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Plastic bondo sqeegie or plastic putty knife.

Adhesive. You want to make sure you get the high-temp/high strength 3M product. Not the 77 adhesive. If memory is correct(and many times it's not), the number is 97.

Just remove all the old pad, clean the surface with laquer thinner or something. Apply a coat to the new pad and hood. Follow can instructions... really pretty easy.

Thanks,
It sounds like a plastic scraper or putty knife and a wipe with a solvent will do the trick. I can't say I'm looking that forward to this chore. Samiam, thanks for the tip on the adhesive, I might have missed that.

hope this help
I did put a big plastic over the engine and i remouve the old felt, and i clean with a puty knife the old dry foam
For glue i use a glue remouver from pep boys and i did bought a new material, not the original from same store with aluminium lining, cut up to sise and intead glue i use some tin metal reinforcements aranged in v shape to keep my new lining against the hood. If anybody can teach me how to post picture i am glad to send some. I believe the glue idea is not so great and because the hood do not have ribs on the midle i use those strips to keep everything in place (3 monts so far no problem)

Wink

I used a 1 hp air compressor with blow nozzle to remove the foam from under 300d hood. The old foam was very crumbly and it cleaned all the loose material off very well. The remaining hard dried glue is rock hard and I will probably not clean off. I used a solvent to clean remaining dirt. Of course I covered the engine area with a blanket.
The foam was making a mess falling onto and into the engine compartment. Now I am looking for a hood liner solution to attach to the hood.

Cleanup

Also, don't forget to mask/cover the windshield and front wiper
cowl. Spray inside or out of the wind - the 3M adhesive works great but is a pain to clean when dry.

There are two of those spray 3M adhesives...
Be sure to read the side of the can... one will say for lightweight stuff like headliners...
And the other will specifically say for higher heat/ HEAVIER objects like hood pads... be sure to follow the directions exactly for max stickum power....one of the two should be 8088 and the other a close number to that...these are the standard ones used in restoration shops...

Sometimes it is good to stick with one brand if you can.. better chance they will work together sometimes...

"The remaining hard dried glue is rock hard and I will probably not clean off."
You can try this if you want , but I would not..it would really be a mess if only part of it did not hold and you had to take it all off and start again... better to pay the elbow grease price up front in my opinion... I learned the hard way on some of these things...

In other words, " rockhard" does not always equate to "chemically stickable"....

Man,

That's great guys!! I didn't have the part number for the adhesive handy and you put a digital picture of the can!! Amazing stuff... some day I'll have to figure out all this nice format and build a homepage.

A while back I heard that "Dynamat" made an under-hood lining- has anyone used or had experience with the Dynamat stuff ? (I think its expensive...)

I used 3m adhesive remover after scrubbing the underside of the hood with a broom and soft bristled scrubber brush. Then I sprayed 3m hi temp adhesive, until I got a thick film all over. Then attach the padfrom the top or bottom up or down...
Its best to have 2 sets of hands
