does this look odd?

Hi,

I was looking at my turbo (1983 300D), where the turbine outlet goes to the intake manifold (at least thats what it looks like to me). I noticed that there is a gap, it is not there on one side, and wide, say 1-2mm on the other. I have to wonder if it is letting in outside air, or letting pressurized air out. Looking at it as good as I can, with a flashlight, it seems that there is another metal tube that goes between the two, I suppose to keep the air from actually escaping. I am not really sure, though... I do hear a whistlingsound at highway speeds that didnt used to be there, but I dont know if the turbo has always looked liek this or not. Performance seems OK, as does MPG, rock steady at 28.5mpg
I have attached the picture, does this look alright/ok?
Thanks for the help,

JMH

There is a large o-ring (cannot be seen unless taken apart) that goes around the smaller diameter flange that inserts into the manifold. As long as the o-ring is ok, you should have nothing to worry about.

As far as the whistling sound goes, check the rubber hose going from the compressor part of the turbo to the wastegate. Also check the ALDA boost line going from the maniforld, to the pressure valve, and to the ALDA itself. It COULD be the turbo to manifold o-ring. I would want to check everything else first since turbo removal in neccesary to replace that O-ring.

I noticed a new whistling sound and it turned out
to be the u shaped rubber ducting between the
air cleaner and the intake of the turbo. Excessive
vibration allowed it to back off a little resulting
in a leak in front of the turbo. I guess the air cleaner
quiets the turbo sound, and I know I could use
a new air cleaner bracket/mount to keep things
from shaking.
