Rebuilding old diesel engines (e.g. 240D)

Dear friends and LarryBible (who rebuilt several diesel engines)

Is it true that rebuilding old diesel engines (e.g. a 240D engine)
is not possible because of very high cost for parts (e.g. piston rings etc.)? So rebuilding an old diesel engine these days means replacing it with a whole new one taken from another car (savaged)?

Is there a cheap way to cure an old diesel engine that smokes
without resorting to replacing it with another one?

Thank you very your information.

Best regards,

Eric

I think you should be able to rebuild and engine for around $2,000 dollars, and buy a rebuilt one from West Coast Metric for $4,400, and a short block for $2,400. I think most people will tell you to not use a used engine, since you don't always know what you are getting.

Depends on where you are. Anywhere in the "rust belt" used engines can be found in good condition as the bodies rust out long before the engine wears out. Nothing wrong with a used engine if the price is right. Say you find a car that is rusted too far to save yet the engine is good. Confirm engine condition with compression test or just take a leap of faith. Even if the car is shipped to you and you have to pull the engine its still a lot cheaper than a reman longblock. Rebuilding can be a good way to go as well but only if you are patient, know what you are doing and have access to a reputable machine shop. Check around at local indy MB shops. Often they will know of salvage cars with the parts you need. They will often give a price on installation and possibly even some sort of guarantee. RT

As far as used engines--or any other used auto parts.
Remember that ALL cars run on USED parts. (Its only new once).

It may just be my bad luck,

But generally, I have found most used parts are just as used as my old parts!! For a while, mercedes had some really good prices on non-turbo engines. I hear now many of those are gone=( But, you can always check!
Rebuilding I don't think is impossible or overly expensive depending on the engine. A little smoke vs ran it out of coolant are to completely different things.
Big big problem is these engines are high tolerance and 99% of the shops )(even though they will tell you other wise) cannot come close to getting a new bore within the wear limits, much less the correct new tolerance! Pistons can be reused if the ring lands are not wornout. If the rings were not broken, there is a good probability it can be used or salvaged by using a slightly thicker compression ring. I'd expect about $1000 but can be corrected by the list(I've never done a 240!).

Eric, you said smokes? How much oil is the engine consuming? Does it have good compression? Does it have hideous blowby?

Eric,
You have sorta left us having to less specific than we might be...

Do you have a 240 engine which smokes.... and is the subject of your questions ?

If so,,, tell us... and share any specifics you or your mechanic know about your engine...

For instance... if we are talking your engine.... Have you put new valve seals into it since it started smoking to see if that is the problem ? They are cheap and easy compared to most every other potential fix.. but they do fix a good number of 'smoking ' problems....

So loosen up with us and we can help you better...

I am sorry you do not consider Larry Bible a friend... "(Dear friends and LarryBible )" and he can be a curmudgeion at times.. but we still consider him a friend....
