Now this would be a fun ride!
I'm looking for an E300 on eBay and came across this. The official street legal TANK:
1984 Mercedes-Benz: G-Class

I think without a turbo it would be gutless. The G models are heavy.

Would something like that really fetch the price that the seller is asking?

And, actually, on the gutlessness, that depends on what the differential gearing is...if it's low enough, I could imagine that it wouldn't be too slow accelerating, but probably has a pretty low top speed. And yuo'd want a low gear ratio for playing in the dirt... Also, another thing to ponder is that it says it has a low range and a high range...is that a granny gear in the transfer case, or does it have a gear splitter? An OM617 with an 8 speed...now THAT would be |

Norm Keiser in Los Gatos, CA (near San Jose) always has a few listed in Hemmings. Check out www.keisermotors.com/.
Does the 460 use a standard 617? Any reason you couldn't drop in a 617 turbo? Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

I think $16,500.00 might be a slight bit too high. I like the green color though. A Unimog would probally be more fun off road, but a 300GD would be easier to handle.

No bidder starts an auction at the top price even though he may be prepared to bid that much or higher. The owner would be better off making the starting bid much lower to get the auction going and put on a $16,000 reserve price.
I admit that $16,000 is less than the average new car sells for, but this G-Wagen is almost 20 years old, over138,000 miles, has a limited buyer group and the AC is in disaray. You would think the owner would at least fix the AC (Was that AC unit an add on?)for the asking price. I know that would turn me off, asked to pay $16,000 for a car needing repairs. Time will tell.
