Just curious - is there any interest in another group buy on these things? I might be able to get the price down to $600 shipped, possibly a little lower, depending on the number of buyers. Drop me an email at rc51@cableone.net if you're interested...

OK, every one has a spring compressor. Well, almost everyone. I need to borrow or rent one for a day. I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee (or a case of adult beverage, if you are close to me), plus UPS both ways. Anyone interested? Thanks in advance.

Performance Products and Rusty (800-741-5252) both rent the Sir Tools compressor at a reasonable cost. I don't believe FastLane has one to rent. I also don't know of anyone else who rents them out. I think most DIY'ers who own one are nervous about sending a $750 tool a couple thousand miles away to someone they've never met... I could be wrong though!

There is at least one member here who will rent his out. But I won't speak for him. He's sure to see this post and respond if he's so inclined.

I recently purchased a Klann spring compressor - It should be here soon. I'll drop you a note when it gets here and I'll take you up on the adult beverage offer!!

Tim, Thanks! We'll set this up. We are almost in each others backyard. Of course, most residents of Delaware are, given the size of the state :-) I need to remove the fronts, cut a coil, then reinstall/ Should take less than an hour. The H&R's didn't lower the 300E enough, even with #1 pads. Rear was OK. Last time renting from Rusty I got the Klann unit. What a pleasure to work with.

Hanno,
How do you go about cutting a coil? Do you use a cut-off wheel in a grinder? IMHO my wagon sits about 3/4" - 1" too high in front. I was considering swapping the springs from a 240 parts car that I'm getting but was concerned about rate being different.

Yes, a cutoff wheel is what you use to cut the coils. However please try 1/2 coil (or less!) at a time. You'd be surprised how much lower the car will be with a small amount of coil removed. I had a similar problem with H&R's, the front didn't drop enough, and the rear was too low. Had to cut 1/2 coil off the front which fixed it. Same deal with my Neuspeed springs. I don't get why they can't make the springs correct out of the box...

Ok, I was going to cut one coil, but, being easily swayed, I'll go 1/2 and see what the results are. Having the correct tool available will mean that if its still too high, the extra work should eat only about 20 minutes. I originally expected a more radical drop, based upon previous install of Sachs sporting kit (10 years ago) into the 190D (yes its slow, but with proper suspension and tires, once you get going, you don't have to slow down again :-))

Make what? The spring compressor? Please don't. These things can kill you. Seriously.

Father and I put one together ages ago, works OK, the spring clamps need to be a heavier steel, but the basic design is solid. The Klann is beautiful, but not practical for a guy with a twenty year old $2500 car. At the time we were using it we had no idea they were rentable. I still like haveing one handy though.

I don't see anyone getting hurt unless they do something stupid.
Darwin Award anyone?

there's a photo of one for sale in the "Parts" classified section... that should give you an idea of the design.
