I lied (coolant temps)

ok.... so I lied... I didnt plan too. I just plumb got mixed up. :p

Anywho's in a previouse post I said my 617 turbo was running at 180F in my Unimog. Well as of right now my Mog has become my daily driver and I see that my memory sucked. Its running at around 200F constant no matter outside temp.

is this good, bad, normal??

Coolant temps are a hot topic around here..... Sorry, just couldn't resist. Many people have chased overheating issues and sometimes found that the gauge was faulty/miscalibrated after replacing alot of parts. First thing is to check what temp it is really running. Most rad shops will have a point-an-shoot laser temp probe and can tell you how hot the engine is running. If it is always 200* never higher or lower once the engine warms up I would guess the gauge is off. If the temps shoot up rapidly when pulling a hill, etc. and then drop off again then you may or may not have a cooling issue. Does it boil over? Any other symptoms? RT

Damn its hard to read this friggn gauge. now I think the mark it sits on is actually 190 not 200.

Anyway it is a new gauge and a new temp sender.

The thermostat opens at about 190 F + or - or about 88 C. In normal use it should run about 190F to 200F whitch is about 93 C. with a little difference in gages and when the thermostat really opens.. If it runs much less than about 190 or about 88C when working on the road then you would need a new thermostat.. If it stays in that general area I would just forget about it.. All the Mercedes I have had in the last 45 years seem to run about there.. and climb some on hard pulls up the steep grades around here.. As long as they stay out of the red it does not seem to hirt them.. I would worry far more about an engine that run much cooler.. If it runs at about 80C or 176 F. or less you really need a new thermostat..

Thank you Ken,

Very informative responce. Since my engine is a transplant into a unimog and not using original auto gauges I then need to know what temps is "in the red"

Thanks again.

For most of the Mercedes I have had the red is above the 120C mark or about 248 F.. You are running a long ways from there..
