Amazing!

I liked the replacement of the turn signal buzzers on your site.

$6 for two buzzers and a buck or so for crimps and wire. I am very impressed: so much that I plan to try it on my cars.

The very first symptom of hearing loss when we get older seemss to be when we realize we can't hear those damn turn signal beepers any more.

I DO appreciate the fact that Mercedes at least used BIG turn signal lights on the dash.

Thanks again for your fantastic site.

Very good write-up! I need to do a line cleaning...on my truck as well. I just wish that there was a place that sold it locally; I keep forgetting to order the stuff...

You have just eliminated the biggest reason for Performance Products to publish a catalog, their great picture showing how to use diesel purge.

Richard - try it and see (hear)

I have owned the 300SD since 1987 and could never hear the clicker at speed. I tend to jealously guard my ears from exposure to loud noise (whether in the woodshop or from purported artists) and think my hearing is still in pretty good shape at age 51. The price of a new clicker from MB makes no sense for this project.

I did do quite a bit of messing about with different buzzers and with sound deadening (aka weatherstrip). The first RS buzzers I tried were too high pitched (>3kHz), the ones I settled on are far better (<1kHz) but were way too loud out of the box. A full thickness of weathertrip (the HD stuff) made them too soft, a half thickness still too loud, a two-thirds thickness just right. That means not too obtrusive at idle, but just noticeable at 3,500 rpm with Horowitz on the CD player.

It's frustrating that their pitch is slightly different, but I am getting a little tired of pulling that instrument panel! If you do not already have them, do get the special MB tools for pulling the panel - very worthwhile as they work right at a modest outlay.

You could of course go with just one buzzer and tap into the feed somwehere earlier in the circuit (using just one buzzer at the wiring point I elected will flash both sets of indicator lights simultaneously, regardless of indication direction) but that would sorely try my very limited electrical skills.

Thank you (and thanks to leathermang, The Warden and roberth58) for your kind words on my site. BTW, as regards Purge, I would suggest that using the fuel line clamp on the feed line before removing it is a 'must do' unless you like diesel fuel everywhere. Even so, I had a few spills. Wretched stuff. Griot's Grease Cleaner with oil munching microbes is a fantastic clean up product here. These chaps seems to like diesel a lot!

Perhaps the dash on my 300TD (123) has experience or is different from your 126, because all I ever have to do is gently push on it from behind.

So Radio Shack does have some useful stuff. I have mostly been unhappy with their stereos and other appliances, perhaps because I tend to buy them used and they never seem to last as well as Sony, Panasonic or other even no-name Mama-San brands. But I guess they can do buzzers well.

Does the buzzer make the light dimmer? I suppose it doesn't draw enough current.

My dash vis1bility complaints are with the two larger illumination lights, not the indicators. I cleaned up the bulbs and put some reflective tape on the araea behind the bulbs and bought new bulbs, and now can barely see the odometer at night. Before this, it was invisible, and I could barely make out the speedo and tach needles.

I am all for someone makjng a big bright, yet cool LED ithe same size as the dash illumination lights.

I read in another Forum that the main problem was the ground wire on Mercedes tends to develop a bad connection and that explains the dimness. I think the ground wire tends to be brown.

I would think that the buzzers of different tones would be an improvement. It would help Stevie Wonder or Jose Feliciano leatrn to use turn signals better, should they ever decide to drive your car, anyway.

I used to be able to hear the signal clicker. My father culdn't hear it after he reached 45 and would go down the road a-clicking for miles, which my teenage self thought was really uncool, and now it's happened to me. How ironic.

Richard -

I seem to recall that the W123 instrument panel is almost proud to the dash at the top and call always be easily pulled out without tools - was that way on my mum's 1980 300TD. That on both my W126s is recessed and a tight fit, so tools are needed unless you push from behind after dropping the panel below the steering wheel.

The buzzers do not appear to affect the brightness of the green indicator arrows. As for the dash lighting, mine is weak too, despite a new rheostat. Must look into that ground connection - yes, it's brown. Whether the RS buzzers are reliable or not, only time will tell. I'm a good test mule, though. I'm an avid signal user - the 300SD is on its second signal stalk. I wore out the original!

Has anyone had any experience of the aftermarket dash lighting kits? I'm concerned any higher wattage bulbs would fry something here.

I once saw Stevie Wonder's home from a higher location on Mount Olympus in Los Angeles. I remember asking the realtor why he had opted for such a poor view if he was as affluent as she said - he was at the base of the mountain. Shows you how much I know about popular music. No, he's not getting the keys to the SD any time soon.

That is how I did it, too. The problem with our method is that the purge only goes through once before being mixed with the fuel in the tank. I think I will try the real method next time.

Yes, I'm afraid your concentration of Purge is no different than if you had just dumped it in the main fuel tank.

When it runs through the pickle jar you will be amazed at how much is bypassed and returned to the jar. It takes me 20 minutes, with some serious engine revving, to use up one can. Shows how little fuel an idling diesel motor uses.

Given that the main filter holds some 400 ml (?), I'm running a 4:5 dieselurge ratio. If you pre-fill the main filter AND put another 500 ml in the jar, bypassing the tank, you will be running close to 100% Purge. However, I have always found the 4:5 ratio more than does the trick.

Now if you have, say, 10 gallons of fuel in the main tank, your method gives a ratio of some 1:75.....kinda like diluting your Scotch. That would get you thrown out of any self-respecting distillery!
