HELP! I broke it.....
While checking the vacuum connections on the black box mounted on top of the valve cover, I broke off all the nipples that that protruded from that box. I was just barely pushing the vacuum line connector back on and they all snapped...must have gotten really brittle from all the years of heat.....What do I do now?

I have done the same thing but not on that black box ,I found a peice of steel tubing that would fit the vacum hose then drilled out the hole where the broken fitting was vacumed out the chips and put a thin coat of JB weld on the steel tubing and pressed it in the hole.........

What is this black box called. I took the cover off and it just appears to be some type of vacuum switch that activates when you press the throttle. I need to know what it is called so I can try and find another one....
Thanks |

I don't have one on my car but I have seen them on others. Fixing it as Will has suggested sounds fairly easy. Or look in junkyards. Maybe the box or parts for it are available from Fastlane or PP? If you don't see the part listed call them and ask. You never know... RT

if so it's a 3/2 way vacuum valve.

The vacuum junk on top of the valve cover is all for the EGR valve operation. Unless you live in an area that has smog checks, just remove all the plumbing and seal off the vacuum source line, and ignore the now-defunct box on top of the valve cover. Works great, and with the EGR killed you may get a little better MPG too.
Plus it's nice to have less clutter in the engine compartment, and now you don't need to buy new parts! |

Depending on the model, this box also controls the transmission vacuum modulator, so you need to fix it or the tranny will bang something fierce when it shifts.
If it's that brittle, I'd replace it since it is also probably worn out. Peter

Hmmm.... "agood" didn't mention his model or year, so that's a good point. On my 1984 it has nothing to do with the tranny so I just yanked it. Should be easy to tell, just look for any tubes that go to the tranny or VCV on the IP.

There are 3 tubes coming out of it .
Here is a picture of it without the cover....I guess I could just patch the lines together...... It is on a 83 300sd |

i just plugged it on my 83 300SD. Did not have any effect on the transmission or shifting, but the car actually felt quicker. Just plug up the lines and get rid of that blasted EGR.
