1991 300D Problems?
I would like to know if there are any known issues/problems with the 2.5 turbos in the 1991 300Ds
Thanks |

I found one with 120,000 miles on it...looks like new.
They are asking $8900. I need to know if this is a good deal |

The 300d 2.5 (602.962 motor) is very durable. I have a friend of mine on this site, CJ who has 193K+ miles on his with no major problems. Like any Benz get it checked out by a MBZ expert. The only known weakness that I can think of is the HVAC systems tend to be weak and can be expensive. This link may help you out. http://www.mindspring.com/~houlihan/mb.htm

There are no major problems with these cars, they run forever and get great mileage (30-36mpg). The usual W124 chassis problems apply, A/C and ACC issues, etc, but that's not too bad. Nothing like the rod-bending issues on the 3.5L S-class diesel! $8900 sounds a little high, unless it's a real creampuff. Better be rust-free, too. Wouldn't hurt to get a PPI at a local MB dealer or shop, for some peace of mind before plunking down 8 large...

I'm not a statistician but I've read a few posts concerning 300D 2.5 timing chains braking. Seems to be the weakest chain system of any MB inline engine and certainly the only with any record in the archives of sub 100K mile failures.
Do a search and see. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

There was a small number engines built between 1992-1995 that had defective timing chains from the factory. There is a recall for this, it only affects certain engine numbers. If your car is affected, MB will replace the chain at no cost (I think). This doesn't affect 1991 models. Normally timing chains last the life of the engine (500kmi+) if you use synthetic oil or change dino oil religiously.

I purchased a 92 300D at 120K and now have 191K on it. Over that time I can't say that I have had any problems. That said, I have had repairs. The following is a list of what has been done since 120K:
- Front shocks - Radiator, hoses and t-stat - Tie rods and ball joints - Shut off valve - vaccum pump - drivers door lock actuator - all four brakes, rotors and sensors - auxillary cooling fan - battery - four new tires - multiple trans, rear, steering, and brake oil/fluid changes One the list is: - rear sway bar links - rear sway bar bushings - front sway bar bushings - rear shocks - steering shock - ASD accumulator Most of this I would consider normal for any car with this age and miles. My my car runs and looks great. I'll keep it until a really nice 98 or 99 turbo turns up.

I decided to buy the car. I have to take the bus to Georgia and pick it up. The owner has been using Shell Rotella synthetic oil. He also has synthetic oil in the tranny. I get the impression that it has been cared for.
It’s going to seem fast compared to my 240D. I am giving my 240D to my oldest son. My youngest son drives a 240D that TxBill found for me in Houston. We will be a three Benz family. |
