617 turbo Warning light for????
 

I have a warning light that is not stock. It intermitingly comes on when driving, usually not when idleing, but that's not a given. Anyway I want to make sure its not warning me of low oil pressure. There is an oil pressure gauge but it does not work. It looks stock so I assume its disconnected cause the stock one used a small oil line to and from the engine to the gauge. There is a temp gauge that seems to show engine temps to be ok.

How can I test to see if this light is for oil pressure? I would assume I need to locate the oil pressure sender and disconnect it then provide 12V to it while grounding the thing.... is this the right concept?

The oil guage is mechanical, hence there is no sender. Literally a line of pressurized oil goes right into the gauge in the back of the dash. Therefore since it is all mechanical there is not a oil pressure light on the 617, very recently (last year maybe) there was an electrical package for a light for this costed like $170. Anyway where is the light? What does it look like?

Ahhhhhh its mechanical in the cars too hmmmmmm? It's mechanical in the Unimog also. This 617turbo is one that is transplanted into a Unimog.

Oil gauge.. it's the one that says "OIL" :D but it may be for the Unimog engine?? and it has not line running to it if I recall. The warning light is electric and it is yellow, it's intensity changes. The light has an older style bulb in it. I can see the element get briter and dimmer. It's OLD. buttttttt then agian the PO (previouse Owner) is a Nanotech engineer soooooo who knows what he came up with. Where on the engine was this electrical package's sending unit installed?

The rig got an italian tune up sunday. Today the light only came on fer a second and at a very low intesity. This is much to my relief but I still wish I knew what it was.

hard to see here... if you look close the red light/button has "KILL" written above it in pencil. Next to it on the right and slightly smaller is a dark looking light/button looking thing. This is the light. It's hard to tell that its yellow. Maybe I should call the color amber

I'm not sure I never looked into the electrical package, as for the dash in your unimog I have not a clue what the light is for. At idle and at operating temperature my 617s run 1.5-1.7bar.

I dont have a clue either. The spot where this light is is shown as an available place to add a switch in the manuel.

Where does the mechanical gauge pick up its source of oil/pressure on the 617 engine?

Should be from the Oil filter housing.

The mechanical oil connection is on the back of the oil filter right where the oil line from the turbo unit conncets. The other guy may have put on a banjo fitting that doesn't have the oil line outlet. The oil line itself is one of the plasitc ones with the swaged-on brass fittings that you can get at almost any good auto parts store.

Get it set up like that now, you don't want to ruin one of the good diesel Mogs around.

You might have to scavenge the junkyards for other oil line from the turbo to the oil filter.
