1963 190D Injector Pump. Help?
 
Hello Everyone: I'm new to the site. I've got a '63 190D I've owned for more than 12 years. I've rolled the odometer over once myself - who knows how many 100,000 miles it has on it (why didn't Merz put a 6th digit on their odometers?)
My question is about my injector pump. The car still runs, burns no oil and still gets abouts 27 mpg - but my idle is now so fast that I am billowing smoke at stop signs. The shop says $1500 for a rebuilt pump and installation. Does this sound about right? Could the problem be a $20 diaphram or is replacement the only option. Has anyone rebuilt their own injector pump? Whats involved? I'm prepared to get a manuel and try or would I be asking for trouble? Thanks for any feed back in advance. I am enjoying the site.

Motorrad,

Its been a long time since I worked on a 190D IP. If I remember correctly they had some kind of a vacuum hookup. So its possible that a diaphram is leaking.

NO, you can't rebuild your injection pump. It takes a piece of equipment called a Diesel test stand to calibrate the IP and only Diesel injection shops have them.

What shop said you need a rebuilt IP? $1500 way too high. Rebuilding your pump if needed souldn't be more that $500. R&R souldn't be more than a 2 hour job, these pumps are easy to R&R. Most likely the pump doesn't have be rebuilt, just fixed for much less than the rebuild price.

I wouldn't have much faith in your shop with the diagnosis they gave you. This is typical with most shops that don't know didly about Diesels.

If you set your timing to 26BTDC and mark the IP, you should be able to R&R the pump without changing the timing.

Kind of sounds like the diaphragm in the governor is leaking, or the start of a plugged line to it. You want to pull the line at the governor and see if it holds a slight vacuum. Then pull the line at the venturi/mixing box/throttle and blow out the line. Then gently blow out the fitting at the venturi, and from the inside if you can make a fitting to reach it. While you're in there inspect the butterfly valve. It or the linkages may be hanging.
