1987 300D turbo with blown head gasket
I am looking at a 1987 300 turbodiesel (w124) and it has a blown head gasket. Would the head be warped? Beyond repair? How much might it cost to have just the head machined. It is aluminum. The man said he can see the coolant "coming out". It runs but will overheat if on for ver long, so he doesn't let it say on long at all. I gathered all this from talking on the phone with him last night.
Thanks David |

If the car has the original head there is a 99% probability that the head is cracked. If so the only real fix is a new head. The heads on these engines are very susceptible to cracking if they overheat and it sounds like this one has been overheated at least once. Later designs you may find on a replacement head are a bit more robust. The '87s are great cars though and if you can buy it cheap enough and the rest of the car is in good shape it may be worth pursuing.

New head is $1500 to $2000 bare, you will also want some new tappets and maybe some new valves if any are too worn.
No way I'd put that head back on, for sure it's cracked or badly warped, and if it has been overheated, it's cracked. Offer accordingly -- price for an 87 300D in good condition, less than 200,000 miles is about $6000, give or take a bit. Deduct $2000 for the head, and more for any other problems. Peter
