Diesel or gas? I think the first diesel model to have hydraulic lifters was the 1984 190D.

I think this is a trick question. Lots of cars had hydraulic lifters by 1963... so I can't imagine them being that late with their first...
Therefore I am guessing this one was the first.....

Yup I'm the first diesel MB to have hydraulic lifters. As for the gas model I have no idea. Why is it that the 2.3-16 has mechanical lifters but the normal 2.3s are hydraulic.

All MB engines that I know of had mechanical adjusters until 1976 or 1978, when the V8 went hydraulic, followed by all new engines after that.

However, Daimler Benz was noted for some rather exotic designs -- Eva Braun's sports car had dymanic wheel balancers, their staff cars for the German Army during WWII sometimes had mechanically regulated Roots blowers (at 3/4 throttle, the blower was clutched in, rasied the horsepower 30%), and at least one semi-production engine had shaft driven overhead cams, so I'm certain there was some engine produced early on with hydraulic tappets. No reason to expect it to be in mass production.

They have used overhead cams exclusively since the 1930s, though.

Benz is a rather conservative company that usually does it's homework before production -- they tend to use a design for a LONG time, but it is a good one to start with (the front end on my 280 SE started life on the Ponton of 1953, also the start of unibody construction, and was used, with ball joints, up to 1976, the "new" front end was used from 1972 to 1992, etc).

As for the 2.3 16 valve, there simply may not be room in the head for the tappets and oil gallery.
