Talking large fuel tank

After several refuelings of my 95 E300D I noticed I was putting in more fuel that the tank could hold. I called the MB dealer where I bought the car and they wanted to see the car NOW as it may have an expanded fuel tank (not good). As I pulled in I was surrounded by service managers and techs who promptly tore into the car looking for anything that may be wrong. The found nothing. The senior service manager took down the VIN and promised to get back to me. He researched the VIN and found out I have the extended range tank option, that he, nor any salesmen ever heard of. The owners manual says I have a 18.5 gal/70 liter tank, in reality it is a 23.78gal/90 liter tank. That explains why I was always putting in about 22 gallons. Anyone else ever experience this?

I thought ALL 95 E300 Diesesl had the 23.5 gallon tank. I think the 500E has the same tank.

Has anybody ever tried to retrofit a 23.5 gallon tank into a W124 that contains an 18.5 tank? Is this a bolt-in operation?

I sure would like the extra 5 gallons for my 300D 2.5 Turbo.

Tim

According to the dealer...no, but then again he did not know about this option. It seems to be a simple bold inoperation.

Just realized you didn't get your original question answered. Yes, the optional extended range tank has been mentioned here before.

LOL. I had a '95 E300 and went through a similar experience. I had just bought the car and was putting in my first tank after running it to reserve. The pump reached 21 gal. and was still going and I knew the manual said it had an 18 gal. tank. I finally topped off at 23.5 and immediately went in to the clerk and told him the pump was out of calibration. He looked at me like I was a moron and gave me the managers name and number. Got back home, posted here and found out that all 95's had the 23.8 gal. tank to that MB could brag about a vehicle with a 750 mile range. It has it too. I drove from Greensboro, NC to Orlando, FL (710 mi.) on a single tank and it only took 22 gal. to fill up.

Hell of an engine.

I wisl I had that. Its my biggest anoyance sith my 190e, its small fuel tank, its only 14.5 gallons. I have to be pulling into a gas station at 300 miles, or at least enough speed to coast there

Ha ha. Do a search on this one, we have all been confused on this issue. My car has the big tank and I love the option. The dealer-rip couldn't even tell me what the option code stood for. One of you guys cleared it up. Thanks again.
