2 months ago, I was pulled over for the very first time. I was driving my father to a Dental meeting in Dayton from Columbus, and had to be there in one and a half hour. Well, as I was passing a green saturn, I was clocked with a laser gun going 79 in a 55. I honestly thought it was a 65, but still I do admit I did speed to pass a car. The Columbus porker was parked on the left hand side by the barrier surrounded by orange cones. He was hidden so that no one was able to see him until you made a turn. When I saw the officer, he quickly jumped into his car and I knew I was going to be pulled over. A minute later I parked the car to the right and he came up for my info. He was polite with me... but I felt this was totally BS since what I read what he wrote on the ticket. He states that he "caught me by chance" speeding. What a load of bull. He could have just written what he really did... stand outside his car with a laser gun and tagging every single car he sees from a mile away.
My friends have been pulled over by cops for no apparent reason. One time, a cop pulled him over(i was in the car) because he went over the yellow dotted line. This happened WHILE we were being followed for about 9 blocks!!!! He then had to glance inside the car to make sure he doesn't find anything. I guess he thought we were some 2 white hoodlums driving in a late model Cadillac.

My friends have been pulled over countless times and have gotten away with many things. Mostly because the porkers "know" their family... or is a relative or some BS like that.

I believe an honest cop that actually chose to be one for the sake of safety and honor are rare... reaaaaaally rare. Most in my oppinion become corrupt, punks in a blue uniform Show me one porker in real life thats friendly and helpful and I might just change my mentality on them... till then, I just see them as any other cop in "Training Day"

OK, I'm sold where can I purchase

OK, I'm sold! Where can I purchase an active jammer? I love my 300SD, but with my Mini, I just can't take 55 mph!

back to radar detectors!!!

Anything other than a Valentine V1 is junk. I drive 400 to 600 miles a DAY as a courier. A V1 hangs in my windshield the entire way. I now look forward to an alarm so I can see what little scam I am defeating!

Unless I am the only car in sight I'm even gonna catch the scatter from the KA instant-on guns before it's my turn. Laser is much harder to catch on scatter but I "see" it about half the time.

If you're the only car in sight you just have to play nice 'cause they can shoot you with no warning if they have laser or KA.

As good as it is, even the V1 isn't a Silver Bullet. You still have to maintain some situational awareness.

As far as the surliness or arrogance of officers involved goes, smalltown Georgia city or county cops are infamous for it! But even they are getting better. They do have a ^&itty job and I'm glad they are willing to do it. I just hope to keep them from doing it on me!

Same here, I rarely drive over 60-65 because the fuel mileage at or above that range is horrible, try driving everywhere going 50mph and notice the difference. My last tank was the worst ever, 26.2mpg, I went 75 at times, 65 to frequent... normally I get 28-30, and got a little over 30 with the 83 on winter fuel so.... I still think I'm gonna get a cheapo radar detector though, something is better than nothing, and it isn't worth it to me to get a V1 for the 84.

I can't believe this thread is still alive! You simply can't drive 50mph in the NE. You will get yourself killed. I normally cruise at 70mph and I am in the slow lane getting passed constantly. I purchased a Bel 985. Its the 2nd or 3rd best detector depending on what review you read. Works very well, catches scatter from Ka instant on, it rarely falses, etc. About 1/2 the price of a V1. If I drove really fast I would hav got the V1 but since I just go with traffic and really only want to know where the "donut patrol" is it works fine. The local-yokel cops around here cruise around with the radar on ALL the time so you get plenty of warning. On a trip to DC about a month ago the Bel alerted countless times at least a 1/2mile and usually much greater distances that radar was in use. Lift the pedal a bit and roll on by. I love it and don't drive without it now. My wife , thought it was a waste of money, used it for one day, and now she wants one too! RT

What kind of mileage do you get at that speed? I drove my 84 back from North Carolina going 65 or slower the whole way. There are times I have to really get going in traffic as well, but I'd rather not travel in that anyway. I really like my Bel, it works great but a lot of false alarms, then again it is hmmmmmmmm about 5 or 6 years old, I may get another for the 84, but I'm still looking.

Jeff,
I have a mpg logging program on my PDA. I average 26.44mpg. The only drop I have seen is one long trip when I was averaging 80-85mph. I like the Bel 985. Check out www.radarbusters.com RT

Wow that is pretty good for those speeds. That detector looks pretty nice, maybe I'll upgrade the one in the talon as I'm a LOT (1/4mi in 13s) more likely to be speeding in that than my benz. I see they go for about $200 even on ebay NIB, which I suppose is reasonable.

Yous guys need to upgrade to a 1987 300D like mine. I have done several freeway trips at extended 80-90mph (mostly in 75mph zones), and my MPG is STILL in the 30-32mpg range! I was shocked too, but my MPG just doesn't seem to drop at high speeds. Even with a couple of top speed runs on one tank, I still got ~29mpg. The only way it gets below 28-30 on the freeway is on winter blend, or on that CA piss they call "fuel", or with lots of stop & go city traffic mixed in. The OM60x engines are really much more efficient, and the super-low drag of the W124 body really helps. I'd assume that at 100mph and up the MPG might finally start to decline...

Yeah, W124's have REALLY low drag coefficients - or so this German poster of mine says. That's better than a LOT of new cars.

Wow .29Cd is quite something (saving picture), I always thought the gearing is what made the big difference in the W124 vs W123 though. I have been enertaining the thought of getting a W124 but I hear maintenance is noticeably more expensive, and I have to get rid of one of my car's first (83). I readjusted my valves so they are perfect now, maybe I'll grab another mpg.

IMNSHO, the 124 maintenance is not significantly more than a 123 - IF ( big IF!) you buy the right 124! You need one from another diesel fanatic who took care of everything. If it doesn't need anything major when you buy it, and you care for it properly, it shouldn't cost a lot to keep up. And, IMO, the 124 is sooooo much nicer to drive, even if it DID cost more, it would be worth every penny! I've owned several of each (see my signature) and I don't plan to buy another 123 (or any MB with a 617 engine) ever again. I expect to own 124's until the repair parts become too scarce or expensive, which I figure will be a good 7-10 years from now at minumum. Drive a few nice 124's (not tired-out examples) and you'll see what I mean...

V1 with remote display + 190D2.2 with 5spd + 78mph with 3500RPM = 36+mpg

If you want to save bucks, educate yourself on Valentine's upgrade program, buy an older V1 in the correct serial number range on eBay, send it in for an upgrade, walla - state of the art radar detection on a budget. Of course I learned this after I paid top dollar! Mount the V1 high for increased range, between the rearview mirror and header sometimes works well, add a remote display wired thru the A pillar cover, this helps with stealth, and LEO's.

I am not a fan of the LEO's of today, they seem a different more introverted breed, though I give them credit for doing a Sh**y job, freudian slip, having a nasty job. I think it's the politicians, their ultimate bosses that are the problem, the police are simply directed to generate revenue via speeding tickets, though they should be accountable for how they go about this attitude wise. This has gotten worse over the last twenty years, and I for one can't see cops wanting to write more speeding tickets, most officers I have talked to would much rather be in the traffic stream, hunting down bad, reckless, dangerous, and drunk drivers, but hey this takes time, and thus doesn't generate the easy revenue. If you think you have issues, try riding a motorcycle, you have to constantly worry and watch for people trying to kill you, yet cops somtiems harrass you as though your a threat to society, and threat to yourself. When was the last time you heard of a motorcyclist killing the occupant of a car?? At least a couple times a month, I read about experienced safe riders, getting killed or seriously messed up, by stupid cage drivers. Like the MSF instructor, in full gear, stopped at the tail end of a long group of cars, in a well marked construction zone, an F350 that entered the construction zone at a high rate of speed, then hit and ejected him 75 feet, and damaged 13 other cars, doubt this guy went to jail. Just this week the owners of Ridewest BMW in Seattle, where both seriously injured when an SUV at the side of the road, whipped a U-Turn directly in their path. This is a common occurance, and 99.9% of the time the driver was too lazy, incompetent, negligent to so much as use a turn signal. I'm told 55% of motorcycle fatalities, are do to violations of the riders right of way. This is the stuff that gets me HOT! A cop even told me, "If you want to kill someone and get away with it, use a car."

Cold shower and asprin time for me, sorry for the rant. lol

Hey, thanks for the tip on V1! I also heard you can ask for a refurbished unit (which sells at a discount), and if they say they're out, ask to be put on a waiting list. You end up getting a current model for less $$. I emailed them months ago and never got a reply. I need to call next, as I my old (1st generation!) Passport really don't cut it nowadays!

About the bike stuff. Yeah, tell me about it. I always ride in full Dainese leathers, unless I'm riding to work, then I wear jeans plus the rest of the Dainese gear. Too many single-digit IQ drivers on the road who got their license from a Cracker Jack box. I pretend I'm invisible and nobody can see me, and leave two fingers on the brake lever at ALL times. So far so good, the only time I've ever been down was in a race at Sears Point... I lost the front at the entrance to the Carousel while chasing a Duc and running my personal best lap times (well, until I crashed anyway). Now I'm stuck in ID with no tracks and it's a major bummer! No twisty roads nearby either. Got a Mille R recently which is pretty cool, although I miss my trusty ol' Gixxer. BTW, how do you like the Duke II? Those always seemed like they'd be a BLAST to ride! And much cheaper than a Tuono R...!
