First gear start 300td

Can someone tell me if a 1982 300td Turbo diesel auto tranny starts in first gear. If not, can it be converted to first gear start?

The transmission should sit in 2nd gear to reduce forward creep and immediately jump into 1st gear as soon as the accelerator is depressed.
